From Richland, Washington | Born in Stewart, Nebraska

Katherine Larson

Katherine passed away in the early morning of Wednesday October 21, 2015 at the age of 95 at Brookdale Assisted Living where she has lived for the past year.

Katherine was born May 31, 1920 on a Nebraska farm in Stewart Nebraska to Peter and Regina Ottele.

After graduating from High School in 1937 she attended Chadron State College for a teaching degree and taught in country schools for four years.

In 1941 she married Charles Wesley Larson. They lived in Iowa for a year and then ventured on to Anaconda, Montana but then World War II started. A son Dennis was born and then Charles left for service. Katherine and son were able to live near the Army camp until he went overseas. Then returned back to Nebraska and resumed teaching until Charles came home from the war and relocated back to Anaconda, Montana for the next 17 years and four more children 2 sons and 2 daughters.

Katherine was a stay at home mom while Charles trained to be a pipefitter. Katherine loved to sew and made many of the children’s clothes. In 1962 the family moved to Richland, WA. Charles worked at the Hanford site; however, he passed in 1979 at the age of 63.

Katherine continued to live in Richland and spent many winters in Yuma, Az., enjoying square dancing.  This is where she met Joe Dolphy. They married and spent their winters in Yuma, Arizona.  They spent time in Minnesota with Joe’s family and did some traveling while they were able to.

Joe now resides with his family in Minnesota. Her love for sewing led her to do quilts for each family. She also crocheted doilies and blankets. Her special love was her love of God and her Church. She was a member of Christ the King Church for over 50 years.  She loved to cook and bake, always having cookies in the cookie jar for the grandkids.

Katherine was preceded in death by her husband Charles in 1979, her parents Regina and Peter, Her sisters Lillian and Genny; brothers Alfred and Sylvester and Daughter-in-law Becky Larson.

Left to cherish her memory is her brother Don Ottelle, Katherine’s five children, Dennis Larson, Bonnie and Gary Scofield, Gregory Larson, Terry Larson, Lorilee Larson. Grandchildren and great grandchildren include: Jeff Larson: Children Zackery, Joshua, Ashlee. Sean Larson: Children Kaden, Paige. Bryce & Karen Scofield: children Justin & Zachary.  Jennifer and Chan Richards: children Ali, Raven, Kodi, Zailey. Tammy & Scott Barnett: children Braeden, Sydney.

Special thanks to Mom’s dear friend Betsy Marshall for all the time and caring she has given this family. She is like a sister to us.

Services will be held on Saturday October 31st at Events at Sunset (915 Bypass Highway Richland, WA).  A rosary will start at 10:30 A.M. with the service beginning at 11:00 A.M. The inurnment will take place at Sunset Gardens following the service with a reception afterward back at the Event Center.

In lieu of flowers to honor her memory donations can be made to Hospice Heartlinks or Christ the King Church.

  • So sorry to hear of Katherine’s passing. I recall her as this bubbly woman always smiling in mischievous way. Your folks were friends of my folks & were active with the church & playing cards together. Take care & maybe our folks are playing a hand of whist. My best, Karen hopfinger mosset

  • We thank you for sharing your mother and grandmother with us. Kathy was a welcome addition to our family. I always looked forward to the months she would spend in Minnesota with us. Her pride in sharing stories about her family was endearing. I felt like I knew the Larson family personally by listening to the family updates.
Kathy was in our lives as most of the Dolphy grandchildren graduated, got married and shared our joy as the great grandchildren came along. Can you believe Dad now has 38 great-grandkids?
Dad spoke with John and Maria who send you their sympathy. They were a big part of Dad and Kathy’s life in Yuma, sharing a love of Mary, the Rosary and their faith.
Dad would love to be with your family for the funeral but traveling takes so much out of him these days. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
