Gary Whiting
02/18/1937 — 12/16/2015
From Richland, WA | Born in Spokane, WA
Gary Whiting
Gary Keith Whiting passed away peacefully at home in his sleep on December 16th, 2015 at the age of 78.
Gary was born on February 18th, 1937 in Spokane, Washington the third of four children to Lloyd and Lillian Whiting. His father relocated the family to Richland in 1949 to work on the Hanford project and Gary attended school in Richland graduating from Columbia High School in 1955. Gary enlisted in the Navy soon after high school, spending 4 years abroad as a Seabee. He came home on leave to marry his childhood sweetheart Sandra Fay Reninger in 1957 and began raising a family.
In 2003 he retired at Battelle, after working as a technician for 40 years. Retirement allowed him to focus more energy on the activities he enjoyed. Gary loved spending time with his children and his grandchildren. He thoroughly enjoyed hunting, fishing and scouting with his friends and family; always having a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon at his side.
Gary will be remembered as a generous and loving father, grandfather, and friend.
Gary was preceded in death by his wife Sandra of 48yrs, parents Lloyd and Lillian Whiting, sister Doloris Hyde and brother Raymond (Bud) Whiting.
He is survived by his sister Kathy (Kent) Madsen; children Chad (Robin) Whiting, Guy Whiting and Heather Rader; five grandchildren Logan Whiting, Jessica (Travis) Dortch, Jordan Rader-Cliber, Mckenna and Kirby Rader; four great grandchildren
Graveside and memorial services will be held on January 2, 2016 at Einan’s Funeral Home in Richland at 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm respectively.
Chad, Guy, Heather,
Tom and I are unable to attend Gary’s Memorial and Celebration of Life. Please know that I valued his life and will forever remember my cousin, Sandee who also holds a special place in my heart
Gary and Sandee join my parents, Mack and Sally along with Lloyd and Lillian and Jack and Fay; all who we deeply love and remember in our hearts! They remain with us in spirit and can be found each day in the beauty of creation; the sunrise, the sunsets, birds, flowers, the rivers; God’s breath we breathe every day!
I am sorry for the family’s loss and hope loving memories will stay with all.
I worked with Gary for Battelle in the 327 facility. Gary would always take the time to answer my questions and give advice as I was new to the facility. I appreciated his guidance and interest in my work success. Thank you Gary.
Uncle Gary was a shining example of family, joy, and love. Always smiling, sweet, and giving of himself. I will miss him and cherish his memories.
I feel bad that I have to miss the celebration of life for Gary. Gary was one of the “Good Guys”. He will be sorely missed.
We always loved our visits with Gary on holiday occasions. Family events were the only time we saw Gary, but you could tell he really was one of the good guys. Our prayers go out to the whole family who will surely miss him. R.I.P. Gary
To all of Gary’s family,
We were so saddened to hear about Gary. We didn’t know he was ill. Glen and I really enjoyed the many visits we made to Richland, staying with the incomparable hosts Lloyd and Lillian! They would usually see that we got to visit, at least briefly, with Gary and Sandee. I have had more contact in later years trying to fill in some blanks in his on-going quest for genealogical information. What a fantastic collection he has I regret that distance kept us from being close friends, as well as relatives, to this wonderful. loving family. I hope, Kathy, that you will ‘pick up’ the little tie that binds us.
Love and sympathy, The Glen Dixon family
So sorry for your loss.
