Bernice Frederick
04/13/1930 — 11/28/2016
From Richland, WA | Born in Lafayette, MN
Bernice Frederick
Bernice Frederick, of
Richland, passed away much too soon, on November 28, 2016. She was born April
13, 1930 in Lafayette, Minnesota to Frank J. and Eugenia Hacker. Raised on a farm with her three sisters, she
graduated from New Ulm High School in 1947. Being an adventurous person, she
moved across the country out to Richland, WA in 1956, where she met Charlie Frederick,
whom she married in 1959. Following the
birth of their two sons, Hans (born in 1961), and Karl (born in 1965), Charlie
and Bernice moved into their first and
only house in north Richland in 1966, where they spent many happy years
enjoying their close-knit neighborhood, beautiful views, and close proximity to
the Columbia River.
Bernice was a faithful member
of Christ the King Church. She enjoyed playing bridge twice a week, and was an
active member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and the Women Investing Now
investment club. She was also an enthusiastic volunteer at the Library Used
Book Store, and The Arc. She loved to be active with her family and friends in
the outdoors; snow skiing, water skiing, hiking, fishing, and hunting. Mount
Rainier was her favorite place to visit, and she considered Sun Valley and
Cannon Beach her homes away from home. Her adventurous spirit also took her on
many travels all over the world with her husband and sons, including Japan,
China, Hong Kong, Europe, and Africa. She was also an avid Washington Husky football
fan, traveling over to Seattle in her treasured BMW with Charlie for most of
the Husky home games. And her family will remember what an amazing baker she
was, known for her bread, cinnamon rolls, rosettes, and raspberry and
strawberry jams.
Her caring and friendly
personality will be sorely missed by her family and friends. She had the
ability to quickly turn a stranger into a friend with her interest in hearing,
and telling, quirky stories. She was independent, loving, understanding,
supportive, and a great listener. And, as a family friend observed, she had that twinkle in her eye that meant
she cared but she also saw through and didn’t accept any BS!
She is survived by her
husband, Charles Frederick; her two sons, Hans C. Frederick and Karl A. Frederick;
her sister, Doris Crone; her four grandchildren, Lindsay Frederick, Brian
Frederick, Ruby Frederick, and Daisy Frederick, and numerous nieces, nephews,
and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank J. and Eugenia
Hacker, and her sisters Edna Maidl, and
Verona Teig.
