From Richland, WA | Born in Richland, WA
Gary Gilmour
Gary M. Gilmour
3/31/45-04/14/17
After a 29 year battle with cancer, Gary’s body decided it had had enough. He passed at home in the arms of his loved ones at 1:23am on Good Friday, April 14th, 2017, listening to his favorite music.
He was born and raised in Richland, WA. His parents, George and Dorothy Gilmour, sister Barbara DeMerrit, and brothers Ray and Ron Gilmour probably greeted him excitedly at the Gate, and are patiently awaiting surviving brother/son Jerry. There are too many surviving loved ones to list, we know who we are, there are hundreds of us, couldn’t possibly list family as so many are, though not by blood. Kali, Ryan, and I could not have gotten through this without you!
Gary attended Richland schools and Perry Technical
Institute. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy 6 years, 5 months, 18 days, 2 ½
hours, completing 7 tours of duty in Vietnam! He worked 30 years on the Hanford
Project.
Raised our family in the same town we both grew up in, fishing, camping, golfing, coaching, and playing. Living each day to its fullest. He had the Best Attitude! Always saying, “I woke up again this morning!” when someone inquired over the years, as he battled 6 different cancers valiantly! Others strongly supported him in his battle; too many to mention at the Tri City Cancer Center, Northwest Cancer Center, and other medical facilities around the Tri-Cities and Seattle. Thank you all! And a special thanks to Liz at Professional Case Management and Chaplaincy Hospice Care for your support.
He quoted Mark Twain; “I endeavor so to live, that when it
comes my time to die even the undertaker will be sorry.” I think he
accomplished that goal! He was my Best Friend, I love him dearly, we will all
miss him greatly.
On April 30th at 1pm, please pause a moment and
think of him, and say a little prayer, and you will be with us in spirit as we
have a private family send-off with military honors.
I thank God for all the time He gave us with him, and all of
you for your support.
Sincerely,
Dona
Got to know Gary in 1981 when I went to work at N reactor. Always friendly and helpful. Admired his courage while fighting his many cancers (cancer survivor myself) and great attitude for life. Heaven gets a “good” guy! Thanks for being a friend.
Dona & Family,
So sad to come back to Richland and read Gary’s obituary in the paper. I am so sorry for your loss. Gary was such a great guy! Always had a smile on his face when I would see you guys around the Tri-Cities. I feel blessed to have know him. My thoughts & prayers are with you.
Ken and I enjoyed running into Gary around town. He was happy to see us and often complementary. I enjoyed his hugs and occasional peck. We would always take a few minutes to talk about our family’s and how we were enjoying life. We will miss that.
OUR FOLKS KNEW YOUR FOLKS AND WE GOT TO KNOW YOU KIDS. WE WERE NOT VERY CLOSE ,BUT WE WOULD SEE EACH OTHER FROM TIME TO TIME. I WOULD ALWAYS ENJOY THOSE TIMES. MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS , GOD BLESS, JACK
To Dona, Kali, Ryan, and the grandkids, I express my deepest sympathy for the loss of Gary. He truly was an inspiration as he fought the fight caring deeply about his family. I feel privileged to have taught you kids in 1st grade and even get to know Kali’s children. Dona, you too are an inspiration with your smile and friendship. Sincerely, Jeanne Richards
