Carolyn Shippert

Carolyn Dolores Shippert died peacefully on February 18, 2018 in Richland, Washington. She was born May 3, 1936 in Billings, Montana to Helen and Clement Ryan. She had one younger sister, Mary Helen Ryan (Danforth), who preceded her in death. Carolyn and her sister grew up in Billings, Montana and graduated from Billings Central Catholic High School. Carolyn moved to Salt Lake City as a young woman, where she met and married Roger Shippert on Dec 29, 1962 in the Cathedral of the Madeleine. Their first two children were born in Salt Lake City. In 1965, they moved to Richland, where their second two children were born. Carolyn was always happiest in the company of her children and grandchildren. She often spoke about how proud she was that all of her children received undergraduate and advanced degrees. Carolyn was an expert seamstress and enjoyed the challenge of making everything from everyday clothing to formal wear to elaborate Halloween costumes. She once made a set of six sizable stuffed dinosaurs for her youngest son when he went through a dinosaur-loving phase. She helped sew both of her daughters' wedding dresses. She managed a fabric store in Richland for eight years. Eventually, her passion for sewing settled on quilting. Her children estimate that they currently have at least 55 of her quilts of all sizes distributed among their homes. Her daughter and granddaughter describe snuggling in the quilts Carolyn made as "wrapping up in grandma love" which we are certain is exactly what Carolyn intended.
