Genevieve Berst
Genevieve Berst died peacefully on February 12, 2018 at the age of 88. Born Genevieve Johnson on June 4, 1929, in Tonasket, WA, she was the youngest of six children of Glenn and Eleanor Johnson. Nicknamed "Johnnie" because of her maiden name, she was also known to her younger relatives as Auntie Gee or Grandma Gee. Johnnie graduated from Tonasket high school and attended Keenan Business School in Spokane, WA. She went to work as a secretary in Richland, WA where she met her husband Buddy Berst; they married in 1950 and were married for 64 years before his death in 2014. Johnnie was a sweet, kind and loving woman who was quick to laugh. She enjoyed bowling, golfing, and playing bridge with her many friends. Her primary job was raising her three children, but she later worked in local libraries and was a volunteer at the Cancer Society. She was an avid reader, switching to audio books in later life when her eyes made reading difficult. Buddy and Johnnie always had a big garden and would grow, can and freeze vegetables and fruit for the winter. Johnnie was preceded in death by her husband and siblings and her son-in-law Warren "Kipp" Davis (Barbara's husband). She is survived by her three children Ronald ("Jesse") Berst (Lori White), Janine Lawless (Greg) and Barbara Berst Adams, and her three grandchildren Elise Kansky, Jereme Berst-Perkins and Shannon Lawless, whom she adored. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The family is planning a private life celebration. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests supporting Friends of Mid-Columbia Libraries.
To the Berst family,
We were very sorry to see that your mom has passed. She was a very special woman! Please accept our sympathy and thoughts.
Ralph and I met Johnnie and Buddy through my mom and step-dad, Carol and George Mace, back in 1991. They were good friends and enjoyed golfing and socializing. Special and fun people. Buddy helped my husband get a foot in the door to being hired here in Richland. Our girls and I always enjoyed seeing Johnnie at our “itty bitty” library here in West Richland. She was always gracious and kind.
We lost my mom in 2013 and Johnnie was always there to chat with me, talk with me. Her kindness was appreciated.
Hoping that she spent her final years in peace after losing her dear Buddy. Too many years went by since she and I talked.
Sending love and prayers to all of you.
Kathy and Ralph Ammendolia
My deepest sympathy to the family
