John Douglas Hughes, 89, of Richland, Washington, passed away, Saturday, February 24th. He was born December 29, 1928, in Orofino, Idaho, to Walter and Olive Hughes. He lettered in basketball and football while attending Orofino High School, and graduated in 1948. Immediately following high school, he enrolled in the University of Idaho, and two years later was drafted into the Air Force where he served in Vienna, Austria during the Korean conflict. In 1952, he married Marguerite Scheeler of Lind, Washington and celebrated 66 years of marriage this past December. During the early years of their marriage, John entered into Gonzaga Law School and graduated with his Juris Doctorate in 1961. Following graduation, he moved his family to Bellevue, Washington, to work as a contracts attorney at Boeing for the Commercial Airplane Division. In 1966, he moved his family to Richland, Washington where he was the Director of Contracts Management at Battelle, Pacific Northwest Division. He continued to work for Battelle until his retirement until 1994. After his retirement at Battelle, he worked for another 10 years with the City of Pasco. John enjoyed family gatherings, building new homes to live in, and displaying the worst golf swing ever while playing with his pals at Sham Na Pum and Meadow Springs Country Club.

John is survived by his wife, Marge; daughters Debra, Pam, Lisa (husband Gary), and Julie, and his son Marc (wife Tricia), and numerous grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Olive, brothers Walt and Norman, sister Pat, and his eldest son, Doug (1979).

A special thank you to Anna Voloshchuk and the staff at Parkside Adult Care, and to Tri-Cities Hospice for their loving care and support. Also, thank you to Monsignor Champoux and Father Dan for their spiritual guidance, and to Einan’s at Sunset for all the arrangements.

A Mass will be held in his honor at 11:00 am at Christ the King Catholic Church, followed by a graveside service at Sunset Gardens at 12:30 pm. Monsignor Thomas Champoux will be officiating. A Celebration of Life will be held at 151 Hillview Drive starting at 3:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to your local Hospice care center.
