Joseph Biro

Joseph John Biro 12/17/1923 – 3/23/2018, born to tobacco farmers Andras and Julianna (Papp) Biro in the village of Nyirbeltek, Jejtotanya Hungary.  The family immigrated to Montreal Canada in May of 1929. Andras was a founding member of the Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church in Montreal where Joseph served as an altar boy. To the immense pride of his mother, Joseph graduated from D’Arcy McGee High School and went on to matriculate from Sir George Williams College with a B.A. and B.S. in 1946.

Joseph worked for RCA Victor before following his family’s roots in tobacco.  He was a salesman for CIA De Cigarros Castelloes, travelling extensively throughout Brazil for four years.  Political change in Brazil brought Joseph back to Montreal via brief stints in Australia and Vancouver B.C.  Shortly after his return, he met Lyse Fortin on a blind date.  In 1956, seeking warmer climate, he followed Lyse and her friend Marcelle to San Diego.  While Lyse worked as a switchboard operator, Joseph continued his education at San Diego State University completing a M.S.  They moved to Santa Monica where Joseph pursued a phD at the University of California, Los Angeles.  Joseph and Lyse were married in July of 1958 and eventually settled in Fullerton, California in 1965 where he worked in various capacities for the aerospace industry and his only son Brian was born.  As the space program came to an end, Joseph transitioned to the U.S. Postal Service where he chose locations for and designed post offices retiring in 1989.

He and Lyse moved to Temecula, California where he built his retirement home and enjoyed the weather and working on the property immensely.  As age began to catch up with them, Joseph and Lyse moved to Richland, Washington in 2014 to be closer to Brian.  Joseph was gifted with languages maintaining fluency in Hungarian, English, French, and Portuguese throughout his life.  He greatly enjoyed reading until macular degeneration took that past time away.  Joseph suffered the afflictions of old age with amazing grace and was dedicated to caring for Lyse until the very end.

He is survived by his wife, his son, and his brother Frank.
