William McClung
William “Bill” McClung died peacefully, surrounded by his family, in Kadlec Hospital on the 23rd day of May 2018, in Richland, WA at the age of 92.
Bill is survived by his wife, Tammy Nguyen; children, David and wife Gene of Seattle, and Paul of Richland; grandchildren, Sonnet and George of Seattle; daughter in law Julie with her sons, Jeff and Eric of Chicago; and great grandson Sebastian of Seattle. He is preceded in death by his wife Mary 2001, of Richland, Daughter Barbara 2002, of Richland, Son Steve 2017, of Chicago, and Grandson Ken 2007, of Richland.
Bill was born on the 2nd of January 1926, in Gary, Indiana to Barney and Bertha (Kegebein) McClung. Bill joined the Navy shortly after Pearl Harbor. He worked on a submarine stationed at Pearl Harbor and enjoyed his time on the beaches of Hawaii. He married Mary Bertoni in 1950, in Ann Arbor Michigan, where they also welcomed their first child David. They moved to Wisconsin in 1952, for Bill to attend Milwaukee Technical Institute for Engineering while working as a TV repairman and they welcomed their second child Steven, in 1953. After moving to Richland, WA in 1954, Bill began working at Hanford as an engineer for the Manhattan Project. During the next 6 years, they welcomed children, Barbara and Paul to complete their family. Bill attained a Master’s in Psychology in 1980, and volunteered at Benton County Mental Health Center and at his local church. He went on to earn his PhD in 2000, in Education. He was planning on becoming a professor at Antioch University before the loss of Mary.
Bill was one of the original founding members of the Richland Dojo and taught martial arts to his children and many members of the community. Bill had been a body builder that had won a spot to compete in the Olympics before WWII. Bill was involved as a scout leader for the local Boy Scouts chapter for his children, and later his grandson Kenny. He taught math and quality control and quality assurance at Columbia Basin College and was heavily involved in set up the quality control and quality assurance department at Hanford and UW. Bill was always on the cutting edge of technology and immediately jumped into computer sciences at Battelle Laboratories Northwest and again for Westinghouse when computers were first introduced and took up entire rooms to run.
Bill enjoyed travel and family adventure, every summer the family would go on road trips and camping and see the sites. After the children had been raised, he and Mary went on many trips to Mexico, Hawaii, Arizona, and California, and the beaches of Washington with each other and their grandchildren, Sonnet and Ken. After the tragic loss of his wife Mary, he met and had 15 years of a very happy life married to Tammy in 2003. Tammy made him very happy and gave him a purpose to continue living. They went on vacations to Hawaii and Vietnam together.
