Robert Nielson

Robert Nielson, 55, of Richland, WA, passed away suddenly of a heart attack on June 27, 2018. Robert was an engineer by profession. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping, fishing, and backpacking. He never got tired of riding his motorcycle. He also loved music—he was a good singer, had a large music collection, and prided himself on his knowledge of music trivia. He had a tender heart and a soft spot for animals, and had many beloved pets over the years.

Robert was intelligent; he was sharp and had a good memory of challenging subjects like physics and calculus that most people would naturally forget over time without using it. He was conscientious of others: he noted people’s needs and catered to those needs without being asked. He was a friend to the friendless. He genuinely cared about others, and people could feel that just by being around him, even if they just met him. Known for his humor, he had a way of putting people at ease.

Robert was always serving those around him. Church responsibilities often kept him busy and asked a lot of him in the service of others, but he didn’t complain. He truly loved to help others and make their burdens lighter in any way he could, and he taught his children the value of Christ-like service and kindness.

Robert was hard working. He was determined and persistent academically, professionally, and even in tasks he undertook in his spare time. He put himself through a rigorous education and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

Most of all, Robert loved his family, and took every opportunity to spoil his wife and two kids. He was a wonderful and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and son.

Robert was warm, kind, generous, funny, easy to talk to, and fun to be around. He was a good man, and a great example to those around him. He is deeply loved by many, and will be dearly missed.

Robert is survived by his wife, Tamara Nielson; his children, Chris (Sadie) and Megan Nielson; his grandchildren, Logan and Hayley; and his siblings: David Nielson, Kevin Nielson, and Ann Pitts; and by numerous other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many cherished friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Noreen Nielson.

  • I have worked with Robert for the past two years at CH2M HILL Plateau Remediation Company supporting the cleanup of radioactive and chemical contamination in buildings, soil and groundwater at the Hanford Nuclear Site. He organized and led the biweekly meetings between us attorneys in the company legal department and the environmental compliance department, where we discussed the complex issues that are constantly arising in the difficult work our company does for the Department of Energy. Robert demonstrated his solid grasp of these matters, with a sense of humor and warm personal regard for his team of environmental subject matter experts and the other participants in our meetings. We will miss him greatly.

  • 3 Nephi 27:27 , Jesus Christ is talking with his disciples and he asks them, “What manner of men ought ye to be? Verily I say unto you, EVEN AS I AM.” Robert has been as close an example to that admonition as anyone I have ever known. He put his love of Jesus Christ into action. I shall greatly miss him as a friend, and a neighbor.

  • Robert was a brilliant engineer and environmental scientist. Revered by his staff at Energy Northwest and well respected by his colleagues and peers, Robert was an exceptional leader who had many significant personal and organizational accomplishments while at Energy Northwest. It was my privilege to know him and call him my friend. Always positive, Robert fully enjoyed life and was enthusiastic over many things including Gonzaga men’s basketball. I will miss our informal chats and will look back fondly on those times we were able to simply have a good conversation. Godspeed Robert.
