Albert Law

Albert G Law was born July 1, 1931, in Ottawa, IL, the only child of Willis H. Law and Ethel Morgan.  In high school he ran track and was class president, football captain and a basketball star.  In 1954 he received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois, got married, and was sent to Korea just after the war.

In Korea he was stationed in Seoul with a Medical Detachment unit and the mess staff knew that when ice cream was served, Lt. Law would get a vegetable bowl full.

After his discharge in 1956 he moved to Madison, WI and started a job and family, resulting in four children:  JoJo, SueSue, HotShot, and Stan the Man. He finished his Masters and PhD degrees from University of Wisconsin in 1963, concentrating on hydrology and prompting his wife Frances to tell friends he “had water on the brain.”

Al taught at Clemson University from 1962-1977 and deeply enjoyed his interactions with students.  But when the University made it plain that a professor’s primary job was to publish papers and bring in grant money, he moved to Richland to work at the Hanford site until 1995.

Meanwhile the children grew up and had families.  Al is survived by 12 grandchildren whom he nicknamed Big-a-Butch-a-Boy, Princess Possum, Ducky Dan, Squirmin’ Herman, Hepzibah Heather, Hepzibah Heidi, Hepzibah Hilary, Guzzling Gus, Serious Samantha, Happa Hanny, Jolly Roger, and Talky Tina.  When they visited Richland, Al always took them to Spudnuts on Saturday mornings.  They have given him 15 great-grandchildren as well.

After retirement Al volunteered with the Richland Police Department and at Kadlec Hospital for 20 years and enjoyed fly fishing and photography.
