Kimberly Chamberlin

Kimberly Ann Chamberlin was born on May 24, 1984, in Richland, Washington. A proud graduate of Kiona-Benton High School in 2002, Kim’s journey of service and dedication began early. In 2001, she joined Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) as a high school intern – the start of a remarkable 22-year career that continued until she went on medical leave in 2023.

Over the years, Kim became an integral part of the PNNL family, most recently serving as a Principal Administrative Coordinator in the Energy and Environment Directorate. She was known not only for her professionalism but also for her heart, always contributing with dedication and grace. Her work with the Future Power Grid Initiative (FPGI) stood out as a source of great pride, as did her passion for cross-cultural learning, especially through the “lunch and learn” sessions with the former Electricity Infrastructure group. She cherished being part of a mission that advanced national interests and helped shape a better future.

Kim’s colleagues knew her as someone who brought light into every room. She was a mentor, a team player, and a lifelong learner – pursuing her education while working full-time. Her presence made teams stronger, and her encouragement helped others thrive.

Kim faced the last two years of her life with incredible courage, fighting a hard and painful battle with cancer. Even as her strength waned, she remained deeply connected to those she loved. In her final days, surrounded by family and friends, there was laughter, storytelling, and moments of heartfelt reflection – a testament to the deep bonds she built throughout her life.

Kim is survived by many who love her deeply: her father Mike, mother Moretta, sister Lindsey, brothers John, Joey, and Jaden, as well as her beloved cat Luna and her dog Lucy. She also leaves behind countless friends, coworkers, and a legacy of kindness, resilience, and compassion.

Kim’s beautiful spirit will live on in all who had the honor of knowing her. She will be dearly missed – and never forgotten.

A memorial service to celebrate Kim’s life will be held on Sunday, July 13th, from 2:00-4:00 PM at Sunset Gardens, 915 Bypass Hwy, Richland, WA.

Flowers may be delivered to the venue the day of the service, prior to 2:00 PM. Food and beverages will be provided and available for all attending.

  • I am deeply saddened to hear of Kimmie’s passing. She was an incredibly talented and dedicated colleague, a bright and compassionate presence in our workplace, but most of all, a dear friend. Kimmie had an uncanny ability to uplift everyone around her, whether through her warm smile, kind words, or simply the genuine care she showed to everyone.

Working alongside Kimmie was truly an honor, and she brought light even to the busiest and most challenging days. Kimmie’s contributions went beyond her work; she created moments of laughter, support, and camaraderie that will forever be cherished.

My thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones during this difficult time. May you find comfort in knowing how deeply Kimmie touched the lives of those around her. She will never be forgotten and will always hold a special place in our hearts.

  • Kimmy thank you for being a beam of light on earth. You always had a smile of absolute joy, acceptance, and love radiated from you. You comforted me during the hardest time of my life, a couple of times, you hug soothed me and to see how brave you were gave me strength, one day we will all be together again and your embrace will be one I know I’ll instantly remember. Thank you for being you. ❤️

  • I knew Kimmie for 4 years. I met her in odd circumstances. I had just split up from my ex-wife and she was the very first person I ever messaged with on a dating app. We never did date but we became extremely close friends.

I messaged with Kimmie on the app off and on and she was there for me through my dating mishaps and divorce. I heard about her mishaps too!! We enjoyed each other’s silly humor but I didn’t want to be friends with someone via a dating app so I left her my phone number. I didn’t hear anything from her for 2 months. Finally, I heard the news that she had cancer.

I knew it was my turn to be there for her more in our friendship and I tried to distract even more with my silly 3rd grade teacher humor. However, I could tell she wanted to carry on as we had before. She loved seeing the pics of me getting shaving creamed in the face by 3rd graders after meeting a challenge and just day to day fun in my classroom. She enjoyed sharing stories about her family from her life as well.
I tried to send pics of my different nature adventures as I know she liked hearing about them. She loved the sunset pics I sent too and admitted that she just enjoyed having me as an outlet at times.

I’ve been a 3rd grade teacher for 20 years. Kimmie and I have a passion for kids and it gave her joy helping give me ideas to make my rockstars happy. I’m making little bags for kids of Kimmie friends and family with treats and fun things as I know Kimmie would appreciate that! I know it’s probably untraditional to do that but I feel it in my heart.

I wrote a book Kimmie and I hope you are flying high with the angels right now! You’ll be with me in my heart if I ever meet my person as I know you wanted that for me. You proved to me that you don’t have to be in person to have an unbelievably amazing friendship girl! I repeat, we were just great friends. I’m eternally grateful for having met you just the one time and you’ll always always be in my heart! I will honor your legacy in my classroom and in my life as best I can girl! Lots of love sent up to you girl! Until we meet again!

  • I first met Kim when she was the administrator of the Technology Deployment and Outreach and was impressed by here efficiency and efficacy at getting things done. Later when I joined the group it quickly became evident to me that she had superhuman abilities to keep track of the schedules, tasks, and needs of the entire group of staff that she was supporting. She had an immaculate sense of perception, recognizing a need before it ever became one, and resolving issues before they need to be resolved. She had the most the cheerful disposition towards her work supporting, and she was a total joy to work with. I am so glad that I had a chance to work with her and she most certainly played a crucial role in the success of our group as we transferred so many impactful technologies into the marketplace to deliver impactful results. She will be missed by many at PNNL!!
