From Benton City, WA | Born in Yakima, WA

Thomas Emmett Gaither

Thomas Emmett “Tom” Gaither, 79, of Benton City, Washington, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2025. Born December 27, 1945, in Yakima, Washington, Tom’s steadfast work ethic, adventurous spirit, and deep devotion to friends and family will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

The son of Emmett George Gaither Sr. and Rosemary Gaither, Tom grew up in Yakima with his brothers Paul, Richard, and Emmett Jr. Tom’s formative years in Central Washington shaped his love for the outdoors, and he carried those passions with him throughout his life.

After graduating from high school, Tom answered the call of duty and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Demonstrating extraordinary courage, he served three tours in Vietnam, during which there was a period when he was declared missing in action. Tom’s honorable discharge marked the end of his military service, but his dedication to his country would remain a source of pride for the rest of his life.

Following his military years, Tom built a distinguished career as a millwright. He spent many years as a traveling millwright in the construction industry, contributing to landmark projects, including work on the Grand Coulee Dam and numerous sites throughout the Pacific Northwest. In 1983, Tom put down roots in Benton City, Washington, and, after twenty-five years of service at Hanford, he retired in 2008. His colleagues and friends at Hanford and in the trades remember Tom for his reliability, expertise, and humor.

Tom was a man of many interests and talents. An avid motorcyclist, he found freedom and camaraderie on the open road, pursuing his passion for travel and adventure as long as he was able. He delighted in the search for rocks and minerals—a passion which grew into the hobby of making jewelry, creating unique pieces that will be treasured by loved ones for years to come.

Life in Benton City brought Tom immense satisfaction. He cherished his little farm and the satisfaction of raising cattle, embracing the peace of rural living. Tom was an active and respected member of his community, participating in the local V.F.W., American Legion, and Moose Lodge. Through these organizations, he built deep friendships with fellow veterans and neighbors, always willing to lend a helping hand.

Tom is survived by his beloved son, William Gaither and his wife Cindie, their two children Laine Houghton and Jared Gaither. His stepson Dan Gaither and his family, and his brother, Paul Gaither and his wife Karla and family. He also leaves behind friends and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rosemary and Emmett Sr.; his brothers, Richard and Emmett George Jr.; his life-long love Patricia Boren, and many dear friends whose memories he cherished.

A celebration of Tom’s life will be held on Saturday, July 19th, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the American Legion in Benton City, WA. All are welcome to honor his memory and share their stories. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to memorialize Tom are encouraged to support a veterans’ charity of choice.

Tom’s legacy is one of service, friendship, and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all whose lives he touched.
