Ping Chien Tsai

Mrs. Ping ChienTsai, beloved mother of Rev. Dr. Stephen Chien of Tri-Cities Chinese Christian and Missionary Church in Richland, WA, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday morning, September 20, 2025.
She was born on December 2, 1934, in Chiayi, Taiwan, to Mr. Ahchi Tsai and Mrs. Ahyau Tsaichen. In 1952, she married Mr. Wenpiau Chien. Before giving birth to her own sons beginning in 1964, she and her husband adopted a son—making her the devoted mother of four.
As the wife of a principled police officer, Mrs. ChienTsai worked diligently and tirelessly to support her family. Through handcrafting, vegetable farming, raising chickens and ducks, and running a small convenience store, she faithfully raised her four sons—one of whom earned a doctoral degree, and another a master’s degree.
When her son Stephen placed his trust in Christ Jesus in 1984—having formerly been an atheist and opposed to Christianity—she was so upset that she considered disowning him. Yet through time, grace, and transformation, that moment became part of a deeper journey of faith and reconciliation.
She began preparing dinner for Stephen each evening so he could attend Oriental Fundamental Bible College at night, while continuing his studies at National Chung-Hsing University during the day. In 1989, she herself accepted Christ Jesus as her Savior—a decision she never regretted.
In 2022, she moved to the United States to live with Stephen and his wife, Esther. She continued to study the Bible, read Christian books, and pray daily. She regularly attended worship services, adult Sunday school classes, Evergreen Fellowship gatherings and church annual retreat with Stephen and Esther. She also joyfully participated in church cleaning and visitation. The people of Tri-Cities Chinese Alliance Church knew her well for her sweet smile and gentle spirit. She found joy in homemaking and gardening.
Esther, a nurse in Taiwan, cared for her with great tenderness. In fact, some who didn’t know them well even assumed Esther was her own daughter.
Mrs. ChienTsai passed away due to cardiopulmonary arrest and cerebrovascular disease, the latter leading to vascular dementia, which troubled her in her later years.
She was a deeply devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She leaves behind a legacy of love through four sons: Chang Shan, Hanlung, Hanyi, and Hanchung; three daughters-in-law: Hsuehchen Chang, Shuchuan ChienKuo and Shuching Ho; eight grandchildren: Linyun, Chiyou, Enmien, Enhau, Yuchi, Yuwei, Hsinrou, and Chenghsiang; two grandsons-in-law: Wencheng Lai and David Lei Nei; two granddaughters-in-law: Suhsuan Kuo and Qianfen Liang; and four great-grandchildren: Yihan, Charlotte Nie, Vernon Nie, and Nelly Nie.
