Tyson Randall
“Thank you for the music, the songs I’m singing, Thanks for all the joy they’re bringing.” (ABBA) Tyson David Randall passed away Wednesday, September 3rd in his apartment in Moscow, ID. He was studying Music Education at the University of Idaho and was immensely excited to work in a field where he could share his love with children in low-income schools across the US. Music was his talent, life, passion and purpose.
Crammed into his small apartment, mostly his bedroom, were two electric guitars, an acoustic guitar, a saxophone he had refurbished…almost, and a piano. Along with those, he had ridiculously heavy, practically antique amps, pedals, a tuner, speakers, a turntable and large basket of vinyls; ALL of which he passionately thrifted and was immensely proud of finding.
Tyson had a mountainous amount of clothing–SO many “fire fits”–almost all of which were also thrifted. He had secondhand shoes perfectly paired with plenty of interesting pants or shorts and eclectic shirt combinations. He had the right fit for ANY occasion. He loved the variety of opportunities to be out with his people and wear his “fits”. He also had a sewing machine he used regularly to alter any clothing that needed better style. He always made it his.
We have to mention his kitchen stash too. Not food, but SO MANY gadgets. He was ready with ramekins for sauces, a blender for making his own oat milk, fresh ideas for doctored Ramen, fancy dipping oil and all the things he needed to treat college friends to an amazing dinner, but potentially still ruin the meal and end up getting pizza.
Since he was 16, Tyson drove our old 2001 Toyota Sienna with complete pride (even after he wrecked it and had to rebuild it with his dad to regain the privilege and opportunity to drive it). He moved up from the minivan this summer for a slightly less ghetto 2008 Honda Fit, but only slightly less ghetto. He even kept it clean(-ish).
None of this would be very interesting if Tyson hadn’t been the type of guy who shared his passions and love with everyone around him. His amazing facial expressions; his enthusiasm while singing and embodiment of music; his theatrics while singing; his insanely quick math brain; his patient ability to explain things; his inclusion of everyone, especially young kids; his attentiveness to his siblings; his loud; his private concerts; his ability to fall without getting hurt (usually); his charisma on videos; his big emotions and passion for life. He filled a room. He filled hearts and still does. He changed lives. Tyson had a natural ability to truly see people, their need for fun, friendship and help. He could connect with anyone.
We are all better because we know Tyson.
Thank you, Tyson, for being with us while you could, living life your way, our amazing son, brother, nephew, grandson, bestie, friend, extra son, classmate, Costa staff member, singer, entertainer, life-bringer. Send us all the fun you can while you’re doing your new stuff. We hope it still involves amazing music and a few second-hand treasures.
