Tonya Kay Garberg
March 31, 1945 – October 3, 2025
From Benton City, Washington | Born in Yakima, Washington
Tonya Kay Garberg, age 80, passed away peacefully in Spokane, Washington, on October 3, 2025, to be reunited with the love of her life, Axel Garberg.
Born on March 31, 1945, in Yakima, Washington, to Francis D. and Grace Day, Tonya grew up surrounded by family and faith. On August 23, 1963, she married her high school sweetheart, Axel Garberg—turning a “Jack into a King,” as she lovingly said.
Tonya’s life was defined by deep love for her family and an adventurous, generous spirit. She dedicated 40 years to her career at Hanford, primarily serving as a security specialist, where her dedication and reliability earned the respect of all who worked alongside her.
Outside of work, Tonya embraced life to the fullest. She loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, four-wheeling, and spending time at the ocean with Axel and their boys. Known for her creativity, she enjoyed decorating beautiful wedding cakes with friends and hosting memorable gatherings filled with love.
A devoted sports fan, Tonya could always be found cheering for the Mariners and Seahawks. She was also a natural entrepreneur, spending the last 30 years managing and cultivating cherries on the Garberg and Sons Farm, along with other family-run ventures.
Above all, Tonya will be remembered for her generous heart and unwavering devotion to those she loved. “Granny” made sure no one went without, always putting others first. Her fiery spirit and zest for life, especially her annual trips to Las Vegas for Cowboy Christmas and a bit of gambling fun, made her truly unforgettable.
Tonya is survived by her four sons: Vern (Kathy), Tony (Jodi), Scott, and Gib (Julie); eight grandchildren: Carmen (Chris), Wendy (Saul), Jordan (Logan), Austin, Addison, Elijah, Keely, and Gibson; and four great-grandchildren: Izzy, Mia, Audrey, and Charlotte. She is also survived by her sister Terry Henry; brother Pete Day (Sandy); and many beloved nieces and nephews. Tonya was preceded in death by her husband, Axel Garberg, and both of her parents.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Temple Baptist Church in West Richland, followed by a shared meal and time to remember Tonya’s incredible life.
