James Morton

James Roy Morton, 88, of Kennewick, Washington, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 13, 1937, in Denver, Colorado, to Helen and Ellis Morton, and moved with his family to Richland, Washington, in 1945. Known by all as ‘Jim’, he was the eighth of fourteen children and grew up in a large, close-knit family that shaped his deep sense of loyalty and responsibility to others. He carried those values throughout his life, never failing to come to the aid of family or friends in need and always ready to offer a helping hand, a listening ear, or a practical solution. In Richland, Jim met and married Ruby Jeanne Koehler, and together they built a marriage grounded in devotion, respect, and hard work. They were blessed with three children: James Charles Morton (Carrie), Andrea Rae Finley (Jeff), and Thomas Allen Morton (Lana), all of whom remained the pride and joy of his life. A devoted family man, Jim cherished time spent with his children and extended family and later took great delight in watching his family grow. Jim worked for many years as a construction superintendent and construction manager, earning a reputation for being extremely detail oriented, reliable, and meticulous in all that he did. His dedication to quality was perhaps best exemplified in the 4,800-square-foot home he designed and built for his daughter Andrea, a project that reflected both his craftsmanship and his love for his family. He retired in 2006, after a long and accomplished career, and was proud of the projects and teams he helped lead. Outside of work, Jim enjoyed sports of all kinds and especially loved hunting, fishing, and golf. After retirement, he embraced the opportunity to spend more time on the water and the golf course, as well as more unhurried days with his children and his family. Those who knew him will remember his steady presence, his willingness to show up whenever and wherever he was needed, his undeniable love for his family, and his passion for life. Jim is survived by daughter Andrea (Jeff) and son Tom (Lana); sister Lois; sister-in-law Hazel (Dodie) Gregory, niece Renae Foster (Jack), nephew Brad Victry (Kristen), as well as grandchildren Kyle Morton, Tristan Morton, Tara Young (Russ), Jeremy Finley (Kristina), Morgan Day (Pete), Gina Morton-Warner, Whitney Morton, 14 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren, and a large extended family and circle of friends who loved him deeply. He was preceded in death by son James (Jimmy) Morton, his mother Helen and father Ellis, and siblings Mary, Junior (Ellis R.), Richard, Everett, Donald, William, Delores, Betty, Larry, John, Carolyn, and Elizabeth. Jim will be greatly missed and forever remembered for his unwavering love, generous spirit, and the legacy of care and craftsmanship he leaves behind. Jim will be interred at Einan’s Sunset Gardens in Richland, Washington. In lieu of flowers, please donate in his name to a deserving charity of your choice, or simply honor him by lending a hand to someone in need, just as he so often did.
