Steve Smith
Steven A. Smith, 73, of Richland Washington passed away unexpectedly on January 1, 2026, at Kadlec Medical Center in Richland surrounded by longtime friends. Steve was born in Vancouver, Washington on November 7, 1952, to George and Hannah Smith.
Steve attended school in Vancouver until his family moved to the Washington, D.C. area where he completed the final two years of high school. The family then returned to Washington, settling in Walla Walla. After high school Steve attended WSU, ultimately receiving a master’s degree in economics. While at WSU he was a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. He then went to work for Battelle Pacific Northwest National Lab, initially serving as a Research Economist and later working as an Operations Manager until his retirement.
On September 8, 2001, Steve married the love of his life, Tanya Williams. Together they made many wonderful memories during their many travel adventures. Their favorite destination was Maui, Hawaii where they traveled yearly. In retirement Steve took up painting and loved to paint pictures of the beaches and palm trees that they both enjoyed so much. His paintings were showcased throughout his home. Physical fitness was a lifelong passion for Steve, and he worked out regularly, lifting weights, swimming or running. He could often be seen jogging on the bike path next to Keene Road.
Steve was always quick with a witty quip and a smile; he had a great sense of humor and would strike up a conversation with anyone he met. Together with Tanya, who possessed a bright smile and infectious laugh, they made friends easily wherever they went.
Steve was preceded in death by his wife, Tanya Smith; parents, George and Hannah Smith; sisters, Terese Allison and Pat Crocket. Steve will be deeply missed by all who were lucky enough to know him.
