Dorothy E. Dains

Dorothy Emmerich Dains passed away August 6, 2001, at 8:00 a.m. at Beverly Healthcare in Pasco, WA. She was born October 31, 1915, to Mr. & Mrs. E. E. Emmerich in Spokane, WA.

Dorothy graduated from Lewis & Clark High School in 1934. Upon graduation she went to work in a cookie factory, making fig newtons. She could remember burning her fingers on the hot fig syrup. After this, she went to work for the Cowles Publishing Company, which published the two Spokane newspapers, collecting the paperboys’ money on Saturdays.

In 1937, she went to Whitman College in Walla Walla. While at Whitman, she joined the Delta Gamma sorority. After one year, she transferred to the University of Washington where she met her future husband, Howard W. Dains. They were married October 11, 1941, in Spokane, WA.

When World War II broke out, Howard went into the Air Force, and Dorothy went back to work for Cowles Publishing Company in Spokane as a junior accountant.

After the war, she and Howard moved several times in Washington and Oregon. In 1948, they moved to the then new town of Richland, WA where Howard went to work on the Manhattan Project. The ranch houses were just being finished, and they moved into the second house completed on the block where Howard still resides.

Dorothy was a homemaker until their two daughters were in high school. She went to work for J. J. Newberrys about 1962, managing the fabric department. She left Newberrys and opened the new fabric wholesalers above Jerry Robinsons. When Robinsons closed, the store was moved to a new and larger location, the vacated Newberry’s building where Fabricland is still located today. now Jo-Anns.

Dorothy was an expert seamstress, making all her own clothes, her daughters, and sports jackets for her husband. She played the piano, was an artist in charcoal, and belonged to a bridge club; but her first hobby choice was sewing. She was a long time member of Central United Protestant Church.

Dorothy’s health began to deteriorate in 1976 when she fell and broke her hip. After this she had a series of health problems. In 1994, she had a massive stroke which left her paralyzed on the right side. Howard took care of her at home until December of 2000 when she moved to Beverly Healthcare. On October 11, 2001, Howard and Dorothy would have been married 60 years.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Howard; daughters, Martha Helen and husband, Terry Graybeal, and Barbara Carol and husband, Lloyd Van Hollebeke; granddaughters, Elizabeth Ann and husband, Brian Mitchell, and Caroline Rebecca and husband, D. Ryan Spott, and great granddaughter, Lillian Alice Mitchell.

The family would like to thank the staff at Beverly Healthcare for the kind and loving care they gave Dorothy over the last seven months to make her life as pleasant as possible. We truly appreciate all you did.

An inurnment service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 10, 2001, in Sunset Memorial Gardens followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Friday, at Central United Protestant Church.
Memorial contributions may be made in Dorothy’s memory to the Central United Protestant Church Choir, 1124 Stevens Dr. Richland, WA 99352 or to the charity of your choice.

  • Dear Barb,

I am so sorry about your mother’s death. I remember her, as my mom and your mom knew each other. I see that they attended the same church also. I am lifting you and your family up in prayer during this difficult time. Take care and God bless you.

  • I was so sorry to learn a year after getting married, that my dear childhood neighbor had passed away.

My mom just told me that Howard, too, passed away and told me about this website, and here is Dorothy, too, so I had to say a couple words about them both.

I remember as a child going to the Dains’s home to color-they had the coolest house and cars! And their coloring table was amazing. I had never seen so many crayons and coloring books in my life! One particular instance stuck out in my head. We were getting ready to go on a trip and I wanted to get out of the hustle and bustle of packing, so while everyone was loading stuff in the car, I snuck over to color at the Dains’s!! Dorothy I called her Mrs. Dains just chuckled when they found me.

She was such a nice lady-they were like grandparents to myself and siblings. Jonathan and Megan Patterson My mom told me that her parents and the Dains went out to coffee one time while my grandparents were visiting-I thought that was cool.

I’ll miss them a lot. I’ll miss going over to their house on Halloween-it was her birthday, and they always liked to see our costumes even after we had moved away.

    I’ll always remember them!

  • Dear Barb and family: I am so sorry to learn of your mother’s passing. My sister sent me a copy of Dorothy’s obituary from The Tri-City Herald — it is a beautiful tribute to a lovely woman. I remember her so well and so fondly, a woman I always looked up to and respected and loved. I know she will be sorely missed. I wish all of you strength and peace as you come to terms with your loss and that your sadness will be buoyed by your precious memories and years together. My deepest sympathy and love to you all, Susan
