Vernon Raymond Fry

Vernon R. Fry, Jr., 62, of Yakima passed away September 12, 2001, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Vern was born October 10, 1938, in Seattle, WA, the fourth of six children born to Vern Sr. and Lorena.

He spent most of his childhood growing up on Stillwater Hill, just outside of Carnation, WA. After graduating from Carnation High School in 1956, he joined the Army National Guard in January 1957. He was honorably discharged in 1965 after earning numerous qualifications and badges.

Vern was a longtime resident of Benton City, retiring from Battelle in 1994. He then moved from the area for a short time before returning to the Tri-Cities.

When Vern was not busy taking care of loved ones, he could be found hunting, fishing, or gardening. His love of the outdoors and horticulture could only be surpassed by the love he showed for his family. Mere words cannot express his life or how he lived it. Vern will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Vern is survived by his children: Mark, Dutch Harbor, AK; Art and Tammy, Arlington, WA; Jim and Merilu, Kennewick, WA; and Sam and Andrea, Kennewick, WA; four grandchildren: Peter, Michael, Christopher, and Niomi; brothers and sisters: Allan and Loraine, Kirkland, WA; Matt and Merlene, Ellensburg, WA; Sue and Steve Carlson, Whidbey Island, WA; and Reney, Roan, NY. There are also numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty; sister, Pat; and previous wife, Carol.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2001, 1:00 p.m. at Einan’s Funeral Home, 915 By-pass Highway, Richland, WA 99352.

  • So sorry to hear about the loss of your Father. I always thought that I would get a chance to take him fishing. I haven’t heard from him for a couple of years and now I know why.

I worked with Vern at Battelle for about fifteen years. He was the groundskeeper and I was the Irrigation Pipefitter and we paled around together all the time. I have many fond memories of him and I truly respected him for the care he gave his beloved Betty during her long bout with cancer.

My fondess memory of Vern was when we were riding around in my cart and I stopped at a valve box so he could turn on an irrigation line to some tree’s. I was watching him open the valve box when to my suprise he started screaming and took off running. I expected a huge Rattlesnake or something like that to come slithering out of the box, but instead a little tiny skunked popped out and took off running the other direction.

After I quit laughing and Vern settled down he explained that all he saw was black and white movement and he wasn’t sticking around to see what it was. I called him a sissy for about a week!!

Vern was an exceptional person and he was a God fearing man also so I now he is in a far better place. I will miss him.JR

  • I worked with Vern for many years at Battelle, and my parents were the recipients of his wonderful dog Muffin. Vern was respectful of anyone he came in contact with. I enjoyed his wit, caring, and knowledge of his field of landscaping. he was a wonderful person which was evidenced in the care he showed to his wife in her time of need. He was God fearing and to quote a cliche’, he is indeed in a better place.

Our prayers are with you, Rick
