  • Fern, as I mentioned on the phone, we want you to know that our prayers and thoughts are with you. We can only imagine the shock and dismay you are feeling at this time. But, we can rejoice because we know where he is and he not only is free from all pain but is free to worship in ways we can only imagine.

The last paragraph of Elbert’s letter written on October 4, 2001, came to my mind a few hours after we heard the news of his death. It is as follows: “As to what has happened in our nation during the past month, I have to rely on the God who made me and challenged me to believe in Him; to let Him be who He is to me as indicated in Psalm 46:1, God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 46:10, Be still and know that I am God.”

I don’t remember him quoting scripture in any other letter but when I had read it at the time, it seemed to reflect he was feeling a real peace in the midst of troubling times.

Hope this will be a comfort to you as it has to me.

He had an impact on many lives as he did with ours. In fact, we were so young when he lived with us, we most likely don’t remember all that he did to set a good example for us.

I can recall how hard he worked when he was attending Howard Payne and was pastoring a small church. It made me realize how important it was to him to follow his call to the ministry and to get the education he needed.

And, it really initiated a desire in me get a good education even if it required a lot of time and effort.

We pray for your peace and strength now and as you make all the decisions that will be necessary in the future.

God bless you and keep you!

    Love, Dee Ann
