Barbara McClung-Smith

12/17/1957 — 08/26/2002

From Richland, WA | Born in Richland, Washington

Barbara McClung-Smith

Barbara McClung-Smith, was a loving mother, daughter, sister and friend with great faith in God and Christ, passed away at her home on Monday, August 26, 2002 of an aneurysm.

Barbara was born on December 17, 1957 at Kadlec Hospital in Richland, WA to two very proud parents, Mary and Bill McClung.

She graduated from Richland High School, at age 16, and received her BA degree in education, languages, and PE from Eastern Washington University at age 19, and completed her MA in education at Washington State University, on a full scholarship.

Barbara had always wanted to be a teacher and taught in the Richland-Pasco School District. During her teaching career, her greatest pleasure came from teaching and working with challenged students, and those in the vocational programs at Hanford High School where she dearly loved the staff and the students in her classes. She took great pride in seeing a student succeed in areas were they thought they couldn't. She and her son, Ken, were also involved in Odyssey of the mind for many years. Barbara has taught at Faith Christian Academy, McLoughlin Junior High, Captain Gray Elementary, Stevens Middle School, Chief Joseph Middle School and presently at Hanford High School. To raise money for school programs, PTA and other associated programs, Barbara facilitated many bake sales, craft programs, school carnivals, etc.

Barbara enjoyed camping, outdoor activities and doing construction and carpentry work around her home and property. She also enjoyed driving her motor home and doing tours of archaeological sites, national parks and natural wonders with her son, thus giving him a more inclusive view of the world.

As a young girl she was an ardent competitor and won many awards in 4H for clothing she had sewn. She was in Girl Scouts for many years as a young child. Barbara was also the first ''Box-Girl'' in the Tri-Cities area, working after school and on weekends to earn money for college.

She was dedicated to her family and son. She was a soccer mom, seeing that her son attended T-ball, softball and music lessons. Family get-togethers were special to her and she would juggle her busy schedule for family visits.

Barbara is survived by her son, Ken Smith of Richland, WA, and her brothers; David McClung and his wife, Gene, of Auburn, W A, Steven McClung and his wife, Julie, of Chicago, IL, Paul McClung and her father Bill McClung of Richland, WA. Along with her niece, Sonnet McClung and nephew, Chris McClung, both of Auburn, WA, and Steven and Julie's sons Erik and Jeff of West Dundee, IL. She left many good friends, Jan, Margo and Deana, included among them.

Barbara, as a mother, daughter, and sister, your family will miss you even though you are with your mother now and dancing with Jesus, we will miss you here on earth very much. We will forever treasure and cherish your wisdom, your funny sayings and your sweet, sweet spirit. We will miss helping you on projects you were always volunteering us for, and then telling us afterward that we had been volunteered. You are with God now. We are all honored and privileged to have known you. We were proud to call you ours. Now you will celebrate with Jesus, and we cannot wait to see you again. She attended church at both the Bethel Worship Center the Assembly of God church.

We want to thank all of the wonderful friends that have called, visited and given their support and offers of assistance and helped us during these trying times.

Memorial services will be held at Einan's Funeral Home Monday, September 2, at 1 PM. Followed by grave side farewells. Viewing will be at Einan's Funeral Home on Saturday August, 31 from 3 to 5 PM, and Sunday September 1, from 1 to 5 PM.

  • Message: I was blessed by Barbs’presence in my life for only a short time but she made an impression that will forever remain sacred to me.

Her love for and dedication to God,her family, the children she taught, her friends and especially her son, spoke volumes about the lady she was,and always will be,in our hearts.

Until we meet again,Dear Lady….I’ll miss you,

    love,Don

To all who are feeling the loss of Barb…read on….

If you don’t know where to turn

‘Cause you lost one dear to you,

You can cry on God’s shoulder

He knows what you’re going through,

    He’ll listen to your sorrows

Give ear to all your fears,

You can cry on God’s shoulder

    He’ll hug away your tears.

    Jesus holds her hand now

    She’s shed her fragile frame,

    Today she walks and leaps

Where there are no blind or lame.

She’s in a land of love and joy

    Where Jesus is her light,

You can cry on God’s shoulder

    He’ll set your world aright.

  • I enjoyed very much knowing Barb at EWU! She was and is a memorable person! I remember especially her smile, bright, twinkly eyes and cheerful spirit. I also remember her big, thick anatomy and physiology book, with which she spent much quality time. Living down the hall from her, and with my sister rooming with her, I had many precious times with Barb. It makes me proud to read of her life since then. She really blossomed into a truly wonderful woman, consistent with who she was in college. I trust Ken will find comfort in the Lord with his unfathomable loss and also in the knowledge that Barb gave him more in her abbreviated life than many sons receive in a full lifetime. What a devoted mom! I pray he would find his footing firm and make her proud. To all the family – I’m so very sorry for your loss – what an incredible woman! – Connie Rosenquist

  • As Barbs Director I hired her 2 years ago to teach in the Richland School District. The looks of enjoyment and eager expectation on the faces of her students told me of the quality and dedication she had every day for her children. Her dedication to children with disabilities effected the lives of students every day. She will be missed

  • Once again I am reminded how important it is to make time for people. Barb and I always talked about getting together, and in 10 years we managed to get together, but not enough. I will miss her greatly.

Ken, I can only imagine how you are feeling…I am sorry for your loss.

  • Barbara & I attended high school together. I last saw her one month ago & she was her usual happy, beautiful self. I will miss seeing her lovely face and am greatful for the opportunity to know her.

Barbara’s passing has made me very sad. She had so much more to give the world. So many more of her wonderful, sunshine smiles!

    I will miss you, Barb!

  • Ken- I was shocked and saddened to read of your mom’s passing. I know how much you will truly miss her.

I enjoyed working with her at Chief Joseph. She put so much time and energy into the teaching of her special students. She will be missed greatly by the educational community.

I remember when a much smaller you came with your mom to the Pacific Science Center Science Celebration classes. And, of course, she always stayed to help.

May you take comfort in God and your many happy memories at this time of sorrow.

    Sincerely,

    Mary Peters

  • Barb, you were a true and loyal friend. I will miss our

long telephone conversations, our lunch dates, and shopping

    trips, hunting for bargains.

    Thank you for providing expert

help when I needed it for a class. I will remember

getting into a photo booth with you in a Yakima mall. The black and white picture of us crammed in together will

hang among family pictures in my TV room.

Kenny, your mom was a very special lady, who loved you dearly. She worked hard in both of her jobs to give you the best life she could. She

    always tried to do something

special to your room each summer to welcome you home from your dad’s. She will miss

    doing things for you, I’m

sure God will allow her to check in on you and she’ll be patiently waiting, until you

    meet again.

  • Barb, I will miss you greatly. I love you. You were like my sister I never had and I know you felt the same. We knew each other since we were 16 and 17 years old and our friendship grew with the years. We went to college together and taught at the same school, camped with our boys in your little motorhome and had a blast discovering all the dinosaurs museums west of the mississipi and even up to Canada and so much more. We embraced single parenthood together and it seemed we could talk any problem out and find a solution. I saw you blossom into such a beautiful woman in the last 3-4 years. You were happy and you made me laugh. I will miss our talks because you were always there for me. I will wait untill we are all together again and we can dance with Jesus. Love Margo
