Louis Elmer Hammer

Louis Elmer Hammer, Richland, WA. passed away peacefully, May 14, 2003 at the age of 85, at the Kadlec hospital. He was born March 30, 1918 in Woodville, Idaho.

He was the fourth of six children, was preceded in death by his parents, Oreta and Austin Hammer: sisters' Afton, Leona Payton, Maxine Cox, and grandson Scott Hammer.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, G. Ruth: Son ,John Hammer & Daughter-in-law Christi, Daughter, Linda Hammer. Six grandchildren: Randy Hammer, Chicago, 11. Tamara Brimberry & husband Josh, Kennewick; Michelle & husband Boyd Robertson,Richland, Shanelle & husband Erik, Las V egas,NV; Dannielle & Britton Hammer,Richland and Great Grandsons, Rhenton & Hayden Brimberry, Kirby Robertson, Parker and Kolton Baylis. Sisters Bernice Smith and Cheryl Lelinski of Portland, OR, 'and many nieces and nephews.

He was a veteran of World War II and Korea. He joined the USCG in 1941. In WWII he was aboard the Flagship Hyda in the North Pacific. The then went into the Airsea Rescue. He was in the first USCG graduating class for helicopter mechanics. He worked on both helicopters and fixed wing aircraft. Was injured in a B 17 crash at Sandy Naval Air Station in 1953.

He married Ruth Rapson on May 29th, 1948 in Ozark, Mich. After several military moves from Traverse City, MI. Elizabeth City, NC, and Port Angeles, W A. He and his family moved to Prosser, he and his family were the first family to develop land on the KID Extension. They moved into their home on March 8th',1957.

He was employed by G.E. and United Nuclear on the Hanford Project. He worked on the Supplemental Crews in several areas. Then was on the start up crew for 100 N Reactor. He retired in 1970

Was very active in the Disabled American Veterans Tri-Cities # 46, and belonged to the Benton Masonic Lodge in Benton City, WA and was a 55+ year member.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday May 20, 2003 at 11:00 A.M. at Einan’s Funeral Home in Richland. Inurnment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
