After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Gary D. Phillips passed away on September 7, 2003. He was born to Eunice and John Phillips on August 18, 1936 at their ranch in Downey, Idaho.
Gary lived in Downey and Arco, Idaho until he joined the Army in 1955, and was then stationed in Germany. He returned home and attended Idaho State College and later Oakland City College of California.
He worked at Lawrence Berkley Lab and then later at the Nevada Test Site where he met and married his wife and sole-mate of 43 years, Cordelia Cordy Carter. They were married at the Episcopal Church in Las Vegas, Nevada on August 11, 1961.
They moved to California in 1965 were he worked as a salesman and buyer and then later owned his own businesses in Livermore, California. They moved to Gold Hill, Oregon for a short time before moving to Richland, Washington. He then worked as a health physics technician for several companies until retiring from Energy Northwest in 1998.
Gary enjoyed fishing from the time he was a small boy. Gary and his wife spent countless hours on the Columbia River fishing. One of his favorite past times was to go camping and fishing at Lake Roosevelt. After retirement Gary and wife spent a lot of time going places in their motor home and spending time outside.
Gary was a jack of all trades and especially enjoyed woodworking and carpentery. He was an avid Seattle Mariners and Seattle Seahawks fan. He spent a lot of his time reading books. He especially liked to read history books and books about World War II. He became quite a history buff.
He was a former member of MENSA, Independent Order of Eagles, IBEW, and Washington VFW.
Gary is survived by his wife Cordelia Phillips and their 3 children. Son Scott and wife Nancy Phillips and children Katie and Daniel of Livermore, California. Son Mark and wife Sharon Phillips and their two children Jaclyn and Steven of West Richland, Washington. Daughter Celia Phillips and Barry Peters and child Kevin of Richland, Washington. His children and grandchildren were very special to him.
An older brother Jack and wife Sally Phillips of Pocatello, ID; nieces Diane, Kathy, and Michelle; and nephews Brent and John also survive him. He is preceded in death by his parents, a niece Jill, and brother Merlin.
A memorial service will be held at Einans Funeral Home in Richland on Friday, September 12, 2003, at 1:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name can be made to the Tri-Cities Chaplaincy Hospice at 2108 W. Entiat, Kennewick, WA 99336.
