Jack R. White
Our father, Jack White, quietly passed away on December l0th at Canyon Lakes Rehabilitation after a short illness at the age of 85. He is survived by his son, John White, Jr, of Seattle; his daughter, Carole White Evans and husband Joe of Henderson, NV; grandsons Neal and Chris of Indianapolis, and great grandson Ian of Indianapolis; and his sister, Nelma Robbins of Portland. He was preceded in death by his father, Hershel White, mother Genevieve Hand, brothers George and Bud.
Dad was born in Chinook, MT and spent his childhood in Kalispell, MT, moving to Great Falls where he met and married our mother, Lorraine Breding on June 7, 1941. In 1943 Dad moved to Richland, where he began working for E.I. Dupont as an electrician. His career as an electrician continued until retirement from Douglas United Nuclear in 1983.
Dad was an active sports participant starting with league bowling at the original Richland Bowling Lanes. He also loved watching softball at Riverside park, and being an active supporter of the TriCity Braves at Sanders Field. Dad was always ready to lend a hand to neighbors and always had the right tool to support any project! In fact, he probably had 5 or 6 of the right tool! Family outings were always eagerly awaited whether it was a Friday night drive-in, a day at Sacajawea or Hat Rock Parks, or a trip to Tacoma to visit with our grandfather.
Dad was a jack of all trades whether it was a home improvement project or making small toys for one of us. He was also an active member of the IBEW Local #77 and even after retirement many neighbors and friends benefited from his master electrician skills, which he so willingly shared.
He was proud to be the grandfather to both Neal and Chris and later in his life was pleased at the birth of his great grandson, Ian Joseph.
Dad married Nina Greer in 1980 and until her death in 2002, they both enjoyed an active life traveling to visit friends and family throughout the United States, gardening, and caring for horses in West Richland. Dad was a frequent Seattle visitor where he enjoyed attending Seahawk and Mariners games, jazz concerts, and dining in some of Seattles best restaurants.
John, Carole and Nelma wish to express their deep thanks and appreciation to Joseph Palowski, his in-home aide, and to the loving and caring staff at Canyon Lakes. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Tri-Cities Meals on Wheels,, a local service that Dad relied on for the past five years of his life.
The family will receive friends at Einans Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 14, 2003.
I was privileged to be one of the “meal on wheels” drivers who met Jack. At first I delivered 2 meals to the home, and eventually to just Jack. At the last I’d knock and holler “meals” and Jack would be in kitchen waiting for me—I always had a good joke for Jack, and he seemed to enjoy sharing times. He was a favorite ‘stopping point’—and didn’t live very far from my residence. Turns out that Bill Sheehan and we have a connection. Rest in peace Jack.
