Jeffrey Alan Highland

Jeffrey Alan Highland was born on January 6, 1942 to Earl and Mary Highland in Aurora, Illinois. He passed away suddenly on December 17, 2003. Jeffrey grew up in Aurora and attended Marmion Military Academy there. After graduation from high school, he attended Stanford University. Upon graduation with a degree in architecture, he became an active member of the military, serving in the Navy on submarines during the Vietnam War and later in London on the Admiral's staff for European operations. He later attended and graduated from Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara with a degree in Motion Picture and Video. After working for a television station in Ohio, he came to work for Battelle in Richland. He later worked for United Nuclear, Boeing Computer Services and Lockheed Martin Services prior to retiring in 2002. Jeff loved to shoot skeet and trap, working with photographic equipment and taking pictures. Most of all he was happy and made others happy, too.

Jeffrey leaves behind his wife, Nadine and grandson Steven Prokop of Pasco; his aunt, Helen Guzauskis of Aurora; his stepson, Brett Prokop and wife Deborah of West Richland; stepson, Todd Prokop and significant other Carol Wright of Spokane; mother-in-law Bernice McLean; bother and sister-in-law Doug and Susan McLean and close friends Jeff and Michele Boston and Ken and Jan Absher. He also leaves behind many, many others who loved and respected him.

A memorial service will be held today Saturday December 20 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Pasco at 11:00am. There will be a reception to follow at the Knights of Columbus at 2617 W. Slyvester St. in Pasco.

Memorial contributions may be made in Jeff’s name to Marmion Academy, 1000 Butterfield Road, Aurora, Illinois 60504.

  • Nadine and family,

Jeff always had a smile and time to share a good thought. It was a pleasure to know him from the days when we worked in the Federal Building in Richland. We send your family our deepest sympathies in your loss. The world has lost a generous and talented man.

    Your friends,

    Linda and Gary Allan

  • Dearest Nadine,

Our hearts go out to you and your family at this incredibly sad time. We are going to miss Jeffrey the elder! so very, very much. Our lives will never be quite the same without seeing his smile, and having the privilege of his kind and gentle ways. Jeffrey was a sweet and thoughtful man – a true and faithful friend.

These are the words of Kahlil Gibran from “The Prophet” – On Joy & Sorrow

“When you are joyous look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy. When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight. Some of you say, “Joy is greater than sorrow,” and others say, “Nay, sorrow is the greater.” But I say unto you, they are inseparable.”

Fondly, Michele & Jeff the younger!

  • Dear Nadine & Steven,

May you both find comfort for your loss. We both are deeply sorry Jeff’s time with us here was so short.

Jeff was a co-worker that turned into a friend. We have many memories of time spent with Jeff. And we are most gratefuly for our recent visit.

Nadine, if you need anything or just want to talk, call us.

  • Dear Family of Jeff: I worked with Jeff for only a short time at BCSR, but remember him well as being one of the “good guys” out at Hanford. My condolences to you all.

  • Jeff often visited the assisted living facility where his mother in law lived. He was such a caring, honest man who made the staff feel good about the job they were doing. He touched many lives with his sense of humor and selfless attitude. He will be greatly missed, but perhaps some peace can be found in knowing he is in God’s loving hands.
