Evelyn Faye Carey

Evelyn ''Lynne'' Carey, born December 10, 1922 in Maude, Kentucky, passed away July 23,2004 with her family at her bedside. She was the much loved wife of Zane, sister Emily JC Royalty of Springfield, Kentucky, mother of Douglas Darlene Carey of Newport, Washington, Dwight Patty Carey of Richland, Washington, Linda Carey Hensley of Granite Bay, California, and Lissa Jeff Holiway of Eagle, Idaho, grandmother of 12, great-grandmother of 4, and loving aunt of a large number of very special nieces and nephews.

Lynne was raised on a farm in Kentucky and worked for a Louisville newspaper before entering the service as a WAVE in 1943. She was Chief Telegrapher in the U.S. Navy in Miami when she met Zane, who was also in the U.S. Navy. They were married for 58 years, living in Seattle for three years, and in Richland since 1949.

Lynne went to work at House Of Fabrics in Kennewick after raising the four children, working there for 20 years from the opening day to the closing day of the store. Recently, she worked at the garden center owned by Dwight and Patty.

Lynne also participated in many different service organizations after her retirement from House Of Fabrics. She was a very active member of Northwest United Protestant Church the entire time she lived in Richland. She was Treasurer of the church for over 20 years and in recent years, has been chairwoman of the Memorial Committee. She has also served in the Tri-City Chaplaincy and in the Kadlec Hospital Auxiliary.

She loved to play bridge, fish, garden, and traveled all 50 states during her lifetime. During the last few years, she has demonstrated her physical energy and enthusiasm for life by participating as a member of Columbia Basin Racquet Club's water aerobics program.

Lynne was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Eunice Carey, her brother, Willard Carey and sister, June Carey Lanham.

Her life will be celebrated at memorial services conducted at the Northwest United Protestant Church, 1312 Sacramento Blvd, Richland at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, July 27. The family requests all memorial contributions be made to the Northwest United Protestant Church Memorial Fund, 1312 Sacramento Blvd., Richland, Washington 99352, or the Hospice Services - Tri-Cities Chaplaincy.

  • Zane and family: I got to know Lynne for a short time during water aerobics at CBRC. She was a delightful, vibrant lady and I enjoyed our visits during that time. I introduced myself Bev to her as having been Zane’s secretary for a brief time at BCSR in late 1975. You were a pleasure to work for and I’m sorry I couldn’t have stayed there longer. Having her in your life for so many years had to be a “gift” to the whole family. Surely she is smiling with the angels now. Sent with caring thoughts—Del and Bev Nichols

  • Zane,

I am so sorry to hear of your loss; it was not so long ago that you and Lynne stood with us sharing memories of our mom. Lynne’s visits and friendship during Mom’s illness was a gift and I know many in the Richland community were blessed by her presense as well. Peace be with you all.

  • Zane and family…I can’t thank you so much for all the caring that “Grandma Carey” did for dad while he was in the hospital.

I think it seemed kind of fitting that they walked hand in hand to Jesus. And I know they will continue to watch and care over us together.

May the Lord be your comfort in this time of need, as he is being ours
