Virgil Walter Sprute, age 76, passed away at his home in Richland, Washington, on Friday, November 12, 2004, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. A Richland resident for 41 years, he worked as an electrician for WPPSS at the Hanford Generating Plant from 1965 until his retirement in 1991.

The youngest of 12 children, he was born September 23, 1928, to Kasper and Clara Dasenbrock Sprute in Keuterville, Idaho. He joined the US Navy in 1946 and served for two years. In 1948, he moved to Wallace, Idaho, to work for the Hecla Mining Company, where he completed his electrical apprenticeship. While living in Wallace, he met and married his wife of 52 years, Catherine Bernice Driscoll. They moved to Richland, Washington, in 1963 where they raised their five children.

Virgil was a devoted father and husband who enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family. He was a member of the Wallace, Idaho, Elks Lodge No. 331, Knights of Columbus Council No. 33047, IBEW No. 77, and Christ the King Parish.

He is survived by his wife Bernice; son Phil and wife Pam Sprute of Issaquah, WA; daughter Anne and husband R.J. Naugle of Chesapeake Beach, MD; daughter Joan and husband Darin Arrasmith of West Richland; and daughter Kate Sprute and Jake Harley of Seattle. Grandchildren: Ryan, Sarah and Mary Sprute; Joshua and Samantha Bradley; and Sean and Zachary Arrasmith. Sisters: Helen Weiand of Spokane, WA; Mary and husband Louis Schmidt of Cottonwood, ID; Maguerite Spengler of Grangeville, ID; and sister-in-law Lucille Sprute of Spokane, WA. Numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

Virgil was preceded in death by his son, Samuel Sprute, in 1995; his parents, 6 brothers, 2 sisters, 6 nephews and 4 nieces.

The family extends a special thank you to all the caregivers that aided Virgil in his last year, especially Yoli and Dr. Janet Arnold.

A rosary service will be held Tuesday, November 16, at 7 p.m. at Einan's Funeral Home. A Memorial Mass will be held Wednesday, November 17, at 11 am at Christ the King Catholic Church in Richland, WA.

  • Uncle Virgil was such a great person! He was so devoted to his family. He had a tremendous work ethic, sense of morality and was very patriotic. What a personality, what a sense of humor. He had to have a positive effect on all of those he touched in life. He will be greatly missed!
