Matthew Lyon

Matthew Lyon, 71, of Richland, passed away April 14, 2005 from complications of Amyloidosis. Born May 4, 1933 in Mineola, New York, his parents were Frank E. and Betsy Gensler Lyon.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Judy Lyon; son, Steve Lyon; two daughters Kelley Lyon, and Patricia Lyon-Peak and her husband James; grandchildren Christina, Jason, Melissa and Brittany; three great-grandchildren; brothers Frank and Steve; and sister Betsy Vanderlan. He was preceded in death by his son David and his parents.

A loving husband and devoted father, he was an inspiration to those who knew him for being a fair and honest man of great integrity. He was a man who valued community ties, working as a patient escort with the Kadlec Auxiliary. He also was an avid bird watcher and sailor. For many years, Matt and Judy traveled widely chasing tugboats with their cameras in hand. He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, National Audubon Society and The Nature Conservancy.

Matt was a health physicist for Battelle until his retirement in 1999 when he and Judy made numerous fun and adventurous trips, per their plan to “travel while we can.” They both enjoyed playing duplicate bridge with each other! at the Community Center. The good times just stopped sooner than expected.

A memorial service celebrating Matt’s life will be held at 4:00 PM Monday, April 18, 2005 at All Saints Episcopal Church, Richland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Auxiliary Services at Kadlec Foundation, Richland, WA or to Amyloidosis Research Program , 715 Albany Street, Bldg. K-5, Boston, MA 02118-2526

  • Matt was a wonderful boss and friend. As a manager he was always considerate, caring, and kind.

I really enjoyed the monthly Battelle group lunches with Matt and Judy. He was always willing to share pictures of their trips taking the tugboat pictures or the other places they had been to. It was like going on the adventures with them.

I was so pleased to be able to attend the celebration of their 50 years together, and hear the stories of their life together. The love that they always showed for one another was always a true inspiration to me.

Judy and Family may God Bless and comfort you with his love in your loss.

    Matt you will be missed.

  • I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Matt since he was employed by the Supply System. He was a very good person and well qualified for his work. I never heard him say a bad word about anyone. My wife and I also enjoyed playing bridge with Matt and Judy. May he Rest In Peace.

  • Matt was one of the kindness and most considerate men that we have had the pleasure of knowing.

Gary and I live next door to Matt and Judy for the last 20 years. During this period of time, we have shared a lot of birthdays, food and great conversation. Matt would even put up with Judy and me having our “gab fest” over a cup of coffee or tea. He would just give us a “Hello” and a smile and go back to what he was doing.

When Matt had his lengthy stay in Kadlec Hospital, there was a lot of indecision amongst the medical professionals concerning his diagnosis and subsequent treatment. When I would stop by in the late afternoon, Matt would always have a smile and be in good humor.

One afternoon, when I stopped by the hostpital to visit for a few minutes, he said that the Dr. hadn’t seen him yet that day. I remarked to him that I wouldn’t be very patient as he was being. Matt replied that he didn’t really have any place to go and that the Dr. had other patients to take care of. I said that I would be climbing the wall by 5:00. Matt just replied that the hospital staff was very busy and what good would it do to get upset. He was right, of course.

So, when we remember Matt—-this is what comes to mind—-is his kindness, patience, and his consideration that he had for his fellow man.

We will all miss you Matt!!!! Goodby—-

  • For nearly 20 years is has been my privilege to have Matt for my friend. We shared many times together and I have many good memories. As an avid bird watcher, Matt was very interested when I told him that one of our avian guests each summer was the Say’s Phoebe. He wanted to get a good photo of the bird, but somehow never did. Either he didn’t have his camera when he came to visit, or the Phoebe was camera-shy when Matt was ready. I know that whenever I see the bird, or hear it’s call, I’ll think of my friend Matt.

  • Judy: I was so glad to see Matt at Jerry’s retirement the other day. He looked so good. I appreciate the friendship of both of you over the years. Matt was great to work with and leaves a lasting legacy to the industry. Plus he was a great guy to just talk with. If there’s anything I can do, please let me know. May the Lord continue to bless you.
