Margaret G. Eckton December 15, 1923 August 25, 2005
Margaret Peggy Eckton, 81, passed away on Thursday, August 25, at Kadlec Medical Center in Richland, WA. Her unconditional love, service to others, sense of purpose, and dedication to her family and community will be greatly missed. She dearly loved to keep herself busy and would constantly be on the watch for hubs of activity in which to immerse herself.
Peggy was born in Portland, Oregon and lived and worked there until she retired, and together with her now deceased husband, Donald Eckton, moved to Seaside, Oregon. She lived in Seaside until October of last year when her health prompted a move to Richland, WA to be closer to her daughter Judy Westsik.
Peggy enjoyed a mixed and challenging work history. She had been a door knocker for Portland Action Committees Together, Director of the Southeast Neighborhood Facility, a member of the Portland Planning Commission, an Ombudsman for Multnomah County, and a community relations specialist for the light rail project. Post retirement did not slow her sense of community responsibility. When she discovered that there was a need for a Halfway House in Clatsop County, she worked tirelessly to help create the Restoration House, Inc. and continued her support by serving on the Board of the facility. In all that she did, she brought a keen sense of community and an interest, concern and respect for people. When questioned about work she said, Im just on of those crazy people who, I guess, just likes to work. Truth is she enjoyed the intellectual stimulation, challenges and activity.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband Don Eckton and daughter Diana Nelson.
Peggy is survived by her children Don Cathy Eckton of Portland, OR, Judy Joe Westsik of Richland, WA, and Bob Trisha of Bremerton, OR.
Our family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses of Kadlec Medical Center for their kindness, compassion and support during this time. Remembrances in honor of Peggy can be sent to the Restoration House, Inc., PO Box 641, Seaside, OR 97138.
Services will be held at Willamette National Cemetery, Wednesday, August 31st at 1:30 PM.
