Alice Madeline Sundgren
Alice Magers Sundgren passed on to heaven Monday, October 10, 2005. Alice was born on May 22, 1916 in Parker, Kansas to Raymond and Mamie Lydia Nunn Magers. After graduation from Fort Scott Junior College, she taught in several one-room schools and used her Aunt Alices school bell well. Upon graduation from Kansas State University in 1942 with a degree in Home Economics she worked for the County/4-H Extension Service in Greensburg, Kansas. There she met George Sundgren and after a brief courtship they were married on May 27, 1947. The desire to farm drove them to Othello, Washington in 1957. As a staunch Methodist, it wasnt long before Alice and George helped start the Othello Methodist Church. Alice taught 5th grade and Library in Othello for many years. As an avid genealogist, she traced her roots to the American Revolution and earlier. She is the last of her siblings, brothers Waldo and Oliver Magers, as well as sister, Phila Ruth Brown. Son, Charles and wife Kathy Kimmel, and granddaughters Christina and Sarah Sundgren carry on her memory.
Thanks go to all those who lifted Alice in prayer and to Tri-Cities Chaplaincy Hospice. Memorial gifts may be made to The Alzheimers Association, Inland Northwest Chapter, 601 Maxwell, Suite 4, Spokane, WA 99201.
A memorial celebration service will be held Thursday, October 13, 2005 in Richlands Central United Protestant Church chapel at 3:00 PM, with a graveside service at Othellos Bess Hampton Memorial Gardens Friday, October 14th at 10:00 AM.
Alice & I became “pals” while she was living at Alterra and I was visiting my dad. We found we had some things in common-her grand daughters I taught them both and teaching in general. We would walk along the hall chatting about the ins and outs of teaching. There was always a bit of bragging about the girls’ accomplishments also. I always looked forward to visiting with her because she was so upbeat. My dad enjoyed talking with her also.
May your fond memories sustain you in this time of sorrow.
Our sincere sympathy to you all,
Mary Peters and “Pete”
