Hannah A. Smith, 86, of Pasco, Washington passed away October 28, 2005 at Tri-Cities Retirement Inn. She was born October 3, 1919 in Grand Forks, North Dakota to John and Martha Schwengler.
She graduated from St. Josephs Hospital School of Nursing in St. Paul, MN and was employed at Pinecrest Sanatorium in Powers, MI, St. Vincents Hospital in Crookston, MN and St. Vincents Hospital in Portland, OR before joining the Army. She was commissioned a Second Lt. and during her preparation for overseas duty during WWII, was stationed at Gowen Field in Boise, ID where she met and married George Smith.
Shortly after their marriage she received orders to go overseas. While there, she put her nursing skills to work at Army field hospitals in Karachi, Pakistan, Bombay and Assam India and Kunming, China. As WWII began winding down, she received orders to return to the U.S. After her discharge from the Army, she and George moved to Vancouver, WA where they had three children. As the children got older, she gradually returned to nursing, working at St. Josephs Hospital in Vancouver, initially as a special duty nurse and eventually rising to the position of Director of Nursing, a post she held until her retirement in the fall of 1969.
Hannah has lived in the Tri-Cities area for the last ten years. She was a member of St. Patricks Church.
Mrs. Smith is survived by daughter Patricia M. Crocket of Lakewood, WA; son Steven A. Smith of Richland, WA; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband George F. Smith and by daughter Terese A. Allison.
The Holy Rosary was recited Tuesday, November 1, 2005 at Einans Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Wednesday, November 2, 2005 at St. Patricks Church, Pasco, with interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Richland.
Memorial contributions may be made in Hannahs name to the American Heart Association.
