Ethel Handrich Chich

Ethel Alma Handrich Chich, 90, of Kennewick, passed away July 24, 2006 at Kennewick Life Care Center, Kennewick, Washington. She was born August 27, 1915 in Manawa, Wisconsin to Fred and Caroline Joch Handrich.

Ethel was a life long Lutheran, baptized as an infant. She was confirmed May 20, 1928 at Saint Paul Lutheran Church, Manawa Wisconsin. She graduated from Little Wolf High School in Manawa, Wisconsin on June 1, 1934 and later married Gordon Chich in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Weyauwega, Wisconsin. They were married nearly 68 years prior to his death April 6, 2005.

The Chichs moved to the Tri-Cities in 1943. Ethel worked at the Hanford Site as a Senior Clerk. She had a Beauty Shop Operator license and had her own shop. Ethel made baby quilts for all newborn babies for the church.

She was preceded in death by her parents Frederick and Caroline; brother Christa Handrich; sister Isabelle Barbara Handrich. Survivors include brother-in-law Russell Chich and wife Myrene of Germantown, Wisconsin; sister-in-law Lillian Larkee of Appleton, Wisconsin; nephews, nieces and many friends.

Memorial services will be held 7:30 PM Friday, July 28, 2006 at King of Kings Lutheran Church at 5th and Edison in Kennewick.

  • What I remember about Ethel was that she was always smiling. A woman who seemed to never sit still, always working and keeping busy especially with cooking up a good meal. Never missing church services. And always smiling. I am very happy that although they lived so far away I was able to visit Gordon and Ethel with my son Tom a few years ago.
