Leonard Corbett Clossey, Sr.
Leonard Corbett Clossey Sr. ''Damps'', 87, of Richland, passed away peacefully on March 10th, 2007 into the comfort and security of the Lord surrounded by his family and loving wife of 59 years.
Len was born in Montpelier, Vermont to Celia Margaret Corbett Clossey and William Henry Clossey. Len was eager to learn and attended grade school where his father was principal. In high school, he was president of his senior class. After graduating from high school, Len attended Holy Cross in Worchester, Mass. where he obtained a B.S. in Chemistry.
Len was in World War II as a lieutenant in the Air Force for five years and resigned as a major. While at war, he was a gunnery officer and flew in the lead plane for the 446 Bomber group on ''D'' Day while riding in the Ball Turet. He was the head of the reserves in Walla Walla and appointed Lieutenant Colonel.
After marrying his sweetheart in December 1947, Mary and Len decided to head west to Richland, Washington. In January 1948, he was offered a position as a Scientist for GE and later Battelle Northwest. He retired in 1984, but continued to work at the Science Center and was a Tour Guide for countless tours at Hanford. He enjoyed this tremendously and the young minds and the children he saw were always a joy for him! Surprisingly, his last tour was cancelled due to 9/11.
Len was also an avid church member and attended Christ the King Catholic Church. He served as a Eucharistic Minister and was instrumental in building the church. Len also volunteered at the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed helping with Monday Bingo.
Len played on the radio in the Ridge Runner Band in high school and continued his love of music by playing the violin and guitar while singing ''I am Your Sunshine'' to his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed collecting rocks, skiing, camping and spending quality time with his family at the Oregon Coast and Mt. Rainier. He was an avid painter and loved to write stories to share with others.
Len is survived by his wife, Mary Katherine, their sons Leonard Corbett Clossey Jr. and wife Maria of West Richland, WA along with their six children Kimberly, Willie, Gabe, Jesse, Michael, and Natalie; Timothy John Clossey and his wife Debbie of Bellingham, WA and their two children Kaitlin and Patrick; daughter Patricia Ann Haaker and her husband Grant and their two children Trent and Shea; son-in-law Dale Gunter, his wife Terry, and two daughters Barbi Lynn Wolf and her husband Dan and their son Jarett, and Tamara Marie Johansen and her husband Jeff and their two children Riley and Lillie. He is survived by his sister Eleanor Daly, sisters-in-law Terry Davis and Laura O'Shea and numerous nieces and nephews.
Len is preceded in death by his daughter Katherine Mary Clossey Gunter and brother William Clossey.
Damps, was a kind and caring man the whole family could feel proud of. He taught us all the values to live by and inspired us to be better individuals. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. You will always be our sunshine!
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, March 15, 2007 at Christ the King Catholic Church, with burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Richland. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be conducted at 7:00 PM Wednesday the 14th at Einans Funeral Home, also in Richland.
