Betty R. Roether
After a courageous battle with breast cancer a seventeen year survivor, Betty R. Roether passed away at Kadlec Hospital under the comfort care of their staff. She went peacefully and quietly on May 12, 2007, with family at her bedside.
Betty was born in Winsor, Ontario, Canada on April 17, 1930 to James and Jean McCleary, second born of eight children. When she was very young, the family moved to Butte, Montana, where all her siblings were born. She attended school there. The family moved to Richland in 1944, where she attended school. She raised one daughter, Linda Downey Wood, who resides in Spencer, Indiana. She has three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Betty was a Courier for Kadlec Hospital for several years.
She worked as a grocery checker for many years in Richland and in California before retiring. It was in the grocery business that she met the love of her life, Bill Roether. They had forty years of marriage before Bill's passing in 1999. They married on Jan. 23, 1959. She was an exceptional homemaker and was an excellent cook. Her home was always immaculate and very important to her. Prior to the onset of illness, she loved to garden.
Betty was preceded in death by Bill Roether her spouse; father and mother, James and Jean McCleary; two brothers, James and Robert Tony McCleary. She is survived by her daughter Linda Wood; and sisters, Bev Raffety Charlie, Anna Williams Joel, Dona Belt Larry; brothers, Jack McCleary Linda and Howard McCleary; grand children and great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces
Her special lifetime friends were Jean McMillan, Gene Newton and Wanda Jones.
Thinking of the memories she has created with all of us through the years can bring a smile to our hearts and an ache that she has left this earthly place. May she always know she is in our thoughts and prayers.
With every thought and prayer for sister, we envision her happy, whole, well and free. God Bless our Sister!
A graveside service for family and friends will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, May 15, 2007 at 11:00 AM.
There will be a gathering at her home in West Richland following the Graveside Service to celebrate her lifetime with us.
In lieu of flowers, her wish was to donate to The Cancer Center in her name.
Although there was several hundred miles between us i believe in my heart that she knew that she is loved by her grandchildren and all of her great grandchildren Kayla Wood, Kyle Wood, Elizabeth Stevens, and Logan Stevens
Our father who art in heaven
Hear this little prayer
And reach across the miles today that stretch from here to there.
So i may feel much closer
To those I’m fondest of
And they may know i think of them
With thankfulness and love
And help all people everywhere
Who must often dwell apart
To know that they’re together
In the haven of the heart……….
Betty was my wonderful sister-in-law for 15 years. I will always remember her absolutely fabulous meals and her gorgeous home, which I tried to emulate. I was always excited to get that call from her, “Why don’t you come over for dinner.” I remember her kitty “Obadiah” that she was crazy about. She would talk about that cat for hours! :- My daughter, Lori, would love to “go visit Aunt Betty” all the time we lived next door and Betty was welcoming to Lori, no matter what she was doing. I have fond memories of those years and I will never forget her. May Betty rest in peace.

Her desire has be fulfilled and the pain is over. My MOM was loved more than she ever knew by her daughter and her family. In her life eternal may she be blessed with all life’s trial put to rest
I would like to offer my sincere condolence to the family of the mother of Linda Downey Wood. I will remember you in my prayers. I lost my Mom in 2000. I have not lost my sister, but I do understand your grief. I was especailly touched by your desire to see her whole in heaven; that is the true help for all sadness. Although I never met Ms. Betty I knew her through the memories of her daughter, Linda Downey Wood. God bless and keep each of you during this time and in the remainder of each of your lives. Linda Peck, Alabama
Dearest family of Betty –
I didn’t know Betty, but knew of her, as I knew of all the McCleary family. I have been a fan of the McCleary family since I was in the fourth grade. My heart goes out to each of you in this time of loss of your Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Sister, and Aunt – all very important and special roles in life. I hope you find some comfort in knowing that you are all cared about, even by someone you don’t know. My special love to you, Dona and Larry, and Jack and Howard. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. God Bless each of you.
