Edna Marian Schonberger

Edna Marian Schonberger passed away at her home on October 10, 2009 in the care of those who loved her. Mom was born on the family farm near Leonard, ND on February 23, 1929 to Walter and Annie Heuer. She married Harold G. Schonberger on May 28, 1949. Mom was a retired elementary school teacher. Mom was an extraordinary woman and had a smile for everyone she met. She was a member of Richland Lutheran Church. Her recent move to Riverton Retirement Apartments allowed her to make new friends while she continued to enjoy her monthly bridge, bunko and Red Hat groups. Family activities always included a good card game of "smear" and sequence. Mom enjoyed bingo and a crossword puzzle book was always at her side. Even in later years, mom knew most of the answers on Jeopardy. She loved watching baseball and the Mariners were her favorite team. Mom was an avid journal writer and not a day went by without her writing an entry. Her favorite color was yellow. Mom was a caring and gracious lady who will be dearly missed more then words can express.

Mom is survived by her son, James Becky Schonberger, Sullivan, IN; daughters Jan Steven Wisness, Richland, WA; and Jackie Bruce Slonecker, Pasco, WA and her loving grandchildren Andrea Slonecker, Jaime Ryan Femreite, Ryan Stephanie Wisness, Charley and Robert Schonberger; Becky's children, Kortni Brian Martindale and Erick Jennifer Barcus; great grandson's Brayden, Reese, Davis, and Wyatt held a special spot in her heart. She is also survived by a sister Verlin Elliott and brother Harold Marlys Heuer; numerous in-laws, nephew and nieces whom she loved. She is preceded in death by her husband Harold, daughter Geri Kopp and Roseann Schonberger; and her parents Walter and Annie Heuer; brothers Ed, Howard, and Wayne; and her in-laws that were all close to her heart.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. at Richland Lutheran Church on Saturday, October 17, 2009 with a graveside service in mid-November at North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery, Mandan, ND. Donations in her name can be made to the Hospice of the Chaplaincy 2108 W Entiat Avenue, Kennewick, WA 99336 or to Richland Lutheran Church 901 Van Giesen Street, Richland, WA 99354. Special thanks to the Hospice nurses, Pastor Martens and Pastor Hickman of RLC, and the welcoming staff at Riverton Retirement and Assisted Living.

  • My deepest sympathy to all of you. I taught, played bridge and laughed with Edna at Roosevelt School. The Roosevelt Retired Teachers met yesterday and we all reminisced about our times with Edna. She was a great person, awonderful bridge player and, most of all a very respected teacher.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

  • Mom was an exceptional person. She will always be on our mind but we know she is in the arms of our Lord Jesus, dad, Geri, Roseann and her other family who have passed on. We, too will see her again. She knew we would miss her so very much, but God was calling her…it was her time to say goodbye. We will love her forever and forever. Jan & Steve

  • The Pagel and Schonberger families have been family friends for nearly 70 years. Many fond memories come to mind. However, the most special one involving Edna occurred at a family wedding. Edna was the mother of the bride. Her personality and smile somehow especially clicked with our three-year-old son. He followed her everywhere that day and Edna so patiently put up with him even though I’m sure she felt there were better things he could be doing! Our condolences are with her children and family.

  • Edna and Harold were our next door neighors for many years in Bismarck. We have fond memories of them both when we drive past our former homes on Catherine Dr. We remember the good times we had with them. We are so sorry to learn about Edna, she was a lovely lady.

  • Dear Family….My deepest sympathy during your time of loss. I will always remember Edna’s smile and sense of humor. And the treats she’d send to your Dad’s office. I still use some of her recipes. Please know that God’s love surrounds you at your time of pain.
