Harold 'Pete" William Peters Jan. 12, 1914 – March 7, 2011
Pete passed away at Wynwood of Columbia Edgewater where he had lived for 12 years after a brief illness. He was born in Tracy, California to George Alphonso Peters and Lilymay Frerichs Peters. His love of boats was evident throughout his life. He built boats with his dad to ply the waters of the San Francisco Delta. In the '30's and '40's he raced outboard service runabouts and "C' Class hydroplanes. He was a national champion capturing the Round Hill High Point Trophy in '49 and broke speed records in '48. He moved from racing to cruising the Delta and SF Bay aboard the "Mary Lynn," a 33 foot Stephens cabin cruiser. He was also an avid traveler. He visited many countries in Europe and Asia. Favorite trips were when he rented boats to navigate the canals of England and France. He also enjoyed trips to Australia, Canada, Mexico, and many parts of the US.
Pete trained as watchmaker in San Francisco, returning to Tracy to open a jewelry store before joining the Navy to serve in the South Pacific obtaining the rank of Chief. He settled in Los Gatos, California operating Peters' Jewelry for over 35 years.
He was active in the Masonic Lodge, Rotary, Saratoga Men's Club, several golf and yacht clubs. He was commodore of the Fort Sutter Yacht Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Geneieve Cornwell, mother of his daughter, and his second wife Mary Virginia Smith. He is survived by his daughter Mary Lynne Peters of Richland, Washington.
No services will be held at Pete's request. His remains will be placed at Los Gatos Cemetery. Donations may be sent to Tri-Cities Chaplaincy Hospice House.
Sorry we can’t be there to offer our support, but you know our thoughts are with you. Let us know when you will be down to California. I leave for a tour to Glacier on June 14 to 24th.
Love,
Anne & Glen
Pete was a wonderful man – always sharp, fun to be around, up to date, always ready with some humor.
