Roy Melvin Fowler

Roy Melvin Fowler, 94 passed away at his daughter's home in Suncrest, Washington, on December 26, 2012. He was born March 8, 1918 in Columbia, Missouri to Iva P. and Roy M. Fowler. The family moved to Moberly, Missouri in 1932 where he attended school. At age 18 he signed with the St. Louis Cardinal Organization to play professional baseball. He played pro ball until 1941 when he was drafted into the Army and served 4 years during World War II. During this time he met the love of his life, Alma Combs and they were married on August 26th, 1943. They had two children: Karen Freeman Suncrest, WA and Michael Fowler, Richland, WA.

He and his wife settled in Richland, Washington after the war, where he worked on the Hanford Project as a welder. During this time he was active in Youth baseball and managed teams for 9 years. The rest of his spare time was spent hunting and fishing.

In 1974 he was transferred by Arco to Alaska as a welding engineer to work on the building of the Alaska pipeline. He retired from there in 1981 and built a log home in Cooper Landing, Alaska on the Kenai Lake. Needless to say with all the hunting and fishing he found paradise in Alaska.

He is survived by his wife, Alma of 69 years, his 2 children, 5 grandchildren: Kelly LaRock-Reed, Brad LaRock, Paul Fowler, Kyle Fowler, and Megan Fowler, 4 greatgrandchildren; Alecia Reed, Dana Reed, Clara LaRock and Axel LaRock, his sister Rebecca Flaherty-Doerge, niece, Kathleen Burt, 1 great niece, Erin Burt and 1 great nephew, Casey Burt.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2013 from 11:00am-2:00pm at Memories at Sunset Event Center in Richland.

A Celebration of Life will be held this summer in Cooper Landing, Alaska, a date will be announced later.

  • To Melvin’s Family: Death is never easy, nor normal. May you find comfort in family, friends and good memories. May you find peace in the words of John 5.28-29 in the hope of seeing him again. Take care of each other.

  • To the Fowler family, our sincere sympathy goes out to you all. I have such fond memories of Roy that I have had ever since I can remember. From Roy sneaking me a pinch of Skoal when I was young to letting me and my brother shoot our dart guns trying to get the dart to stick to his bald head. One of my most memorable memories was a time we all went camping to the Tucannon and listening to all his stories about Baseball and his life in Alaska. He has always been someone that I have looked up to as a role model and a Grandfather figure. He will truly be missed.

  • DEAR BECKY. IT SEEMS SO SAD THAT IT TAKES TIMES LIKE THIS FOR SOME OF US TO RE-CONNECT. OUR KIDS ALL ATTENDED OLD “LEWIS ‘N CLARK”& WERE “SOUTH RICHLAND” RESIDENTS FOR SO LONG. I REMEMBER THE TIMES THAT YOU’D COME BACK TO WORK, AFTER VISITING ROY UP ON “THE NORTH-SLOPE” PROJECT–ALL CHARGED UP BY THAT ALASKA VISIT. MAY GOD SHOWER THE FOWLER FAMILY WITH BLESSINGS. BOB BUSH

  • HI Karen and family,

Your old neighbors, Ruthann and Jeanie Hutchins, on Benham.

Our sincere sympathy to you, Mike, your mom Alma and Becky.

When I read your dad’s obit, so many fond memories of our days growing up in the “southside” of Richland. I also had forgotten that Becky was your aunt. Would see Becky often with Gloria Sis Kurz Nesbitt. Gloria passed away 12/31/12..last of the Kruz family.

My husband and I moved to Bellingham fall of 2008. Jeanie’s husband died in 1995. One daughter lives here and one lives in Thailand. Jeanie is now into short term memory loss..hard to see her going that way. Our mother had Alzhiemer and passed in 1987.

Dad died in 1991. My husband and I live across the street from Jeanie.

Special thoughts and prayers go with you during this journey of life.

May God continue to be a Blessing to all of the family.

    Our love,

Carl and Ruthann Jensen and Jeanie Simon
