Shelia Marlene Hansen

Shelia Marlene Hansen, age 75, was called to be with her creator on Sunday, March 24, 2013, near her home in Richland, Washington. Shelia was born on December 22, 1937, in Chanute, Kansas. She was raised in Chanute and graduated from high school there in 1955. She attended junior college in Chanute. During this time, Shelia met Leo Edward Hansen, and they were married on May 6, 1961, in Humboldt, Kansas.

Shelia worked as a kindergarten teacher while Leo attended Kansas State University for a degree in Nuclear Engineering. In 1965, Shelia and Leo moved with their three young children to Richland, Washington, where Leo was employed with Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratories.

While raising her family in Richland, Shelia was involved in Christ the King Catholic Parish. She was also involved in many sports, and activities. Between her children and grandchildren, Shelia attended hundreds of football, volleyball, baseball, softball, and basketball games. She also attended dance recitals and was a constant supporter in the stands at every sporting event.

Shelia and Leo spent five years in Bellevue, Washington, and returned to the Tri-Cities in 1995. They joined St. Joseph's Catholic Parish in Kennewick, while living in an apartment upon their return. They remained as members of St. Joseph's Parish even after moving to their home in Richland. Shelia continued her membership in St. Joseph's following Leo's death in 2006.

Shelia loved life and was an amazing woman. After losing her son Greg in 2004, and Leo shortly thereafter, she was diagnosed with breast and lung cancer. Her faith and love in family helped her through these most difficult times. Recently Sheila celebrated five years cancer free, which is a testament to the zest with which she lived life.

Shelia is preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Eva Rains of Chanute, Kansas, her husband Leo Edward Hansen, and her oldest son, Gregory Edward Hansen. She is survived by her daughters Sally Lehmann husband John of Richland, Washington; Janet McAdie husband David of Kennewick, Washington; Mary Jo Koch husband Mark of Puyallup, Washington; and son Michael Hansen wife Lara of Ravensdale, Washington. She is also survived by her eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: Derek, Scotty, Travis, Samantha, Andie, Michael, Heidi, Shelia, Alex, Jordan, Taylor, Camryn, and Emma. She leaves behind her brother, Ronald Rains wife Sherry and sister, Myrna Whitmer husband Jim.

A Rosary will be held on Friday, March 29 at 6:00 PM. The location for the Rosary is Memories at Sunset Event Center. The funeral will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at 12:00 PM on Saturday, March 30. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Richland, Washington. There will be a reception at St. Joseph's Parish following the burial.

  • I am so sorry for my cousin and her beloved family. Shelia and I grew up together playing church, cheerlerleading and having fun. We even sang together at a wedding,, They said we were good but I know they were being nice.. Even though I did not see her often, I remembered the good times. My heart is with you. Marie
