Helen K Goodey

06/27/1925 — 02/02/2014

From Richland, WA, Benton | Born in Lewiston, UT

Helen K Goodey

Helen Kent Goodey was born on June 27, 1925 to James Ray and Ettie Burnham Kent at their farm home in Lewiston, Utah, joining four older brothers and a sister. At Cache Valley High School she caught the eye of Oris Goodey. After his return from WWII, they were married on May 15, 1946 in the Idaho Falls Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They made their home in Clarkston, Utah.

They welcomed their sons Kent in 1947 and LeVan in 1953. They moved to Tropic, Utah in 1954 where Oris taught industrial arts at the high school. Their summers were spent living in a log cabin at the Grand Canyon where Oris worked as a park ranger.

Helen and Oris moved to Richland in 1957 where their daughter, Camille, was born in 1958. They purchased an "A" house in 1959 and spent the next 55 years side-by-side making it a beautiful home full of love. Their daughter Shannon was born in 1964.

Helen devoted her life to serving others. She played the piano and organ, sang, and directed music. She was an exquisite cook, seamstress, quilt maker, and artist. She was always a gracious hostess and had a gift of making people feel welcome and loved.

Helen served in numerous leadership positions of the LDS Church in Richland. Her favorite was leading the singing for the young children. She spent countless hours creating beautiful visual aids that personified her creativity, artistry, and detailed perfection. Helen said it was a privilege to teach the gospel of Jesus Christ to children through song.

Helen and Oris served as volunteer workers at the Seattle Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for 18 years where they volunteered one week a month. They were also among the first workers called to serve at the Columbia River Temple in the Tri-Cities when it opened in 2001.

Helen passed away on February 2, leaving a large loving family. She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Oris, and children Kent and Connie Goodey of West Richland, LeVan and Chris Goodey of Los Alamos, New Mexico, Camille and Scott Page of Richland, and Shannon and Tim Turner of Richland. She loved spending time with her 17 grandchildren: Segren Bernard, Courtney Sarah Goodey, Elis Goodey, Hillary Beren McKay, Neil Courtney Anne Goodey, Whitney Rocio Goodey, Nathan Kaitlin Goodey, Amber Goodey, Ben Goodey, Sam Goodey, Joshua Goodey, Jacob Goodey, Andrea Chad Luke, Bradley Jennifer Page, Matthew Page, Daniel Page, Eric CarlyTurner, and Marlee Turner. She delighted in her 8 great granddaughters: Sloane Goodey, Stella Goodey, Nico Goodey, Ezra Goodey, Gwyneth McKay, Bella Luke, Senna Luke, and Erynn Luke. Helen was preceded in death by her parents and all of her siblings.

Viewing will be Friday, February 7 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Dedication of the grave will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Richland at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 8th. Memorial Services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1321 Jadwin, Richland. Donations may be made in Helen's name to the Tri-Cities Chaplaincy Hospice.

  • Helen was such a special person in my life growing up. So many wonderful memories to reflect on. Her smile, her kindness, her wonderful cookies and apple cider are just a few. When my parents passed she was one of the first to give me a hug! Helen and Oris invited me to their home where they made me feel so welcomed. What a wonderful time we had. Special women indeed! She will be missed but forever remembered and held tight in my heart. My prayers to the Goodey family in your loss.

  • I have some wonderful memories of Aunt Helen. She definitely had a way of making you feel loves and cared about. My mother, her sister Pearl, loved and cherished Aunt Helen. I can visualize the reunion they are having. Mom often said how unfair she thought it was to only have one sister and have her live so far away. Now they will be together forever. What a reunion.

Thanks to the thoughtfulness of Cal Manning, I learned this morning of Helen’s passing. Though I have not seen you in nearly 20 years, my mind was instantly illuminated with fond memories of our association in years past, particularly of your faithful service in the Seattle Temple. You have indeed been blessed with 68 years of wonderful mortal togetherness. Transitioning to a new phase, you will eventually reap the rewards of eternal togetherness, never again to be separated. My wishes are for your current sadness to be assuaged with the knowledge of the future.

    Kindest regards,

    Dennis Wilson

  • I will never forget the kindness that always gleamed out of Helen’s eyes, and the spark of humor that always accompanied her. She was always busy serving others but somehow never forgot to just be happy and enjoy the best parts of life. She was honestly interested in everyone, and had a knack for finding the spark of greatness in each of us. Helen, I love you so and will so miss you. Morgan and Gideon love the blankets you made them, and I adored you for making me feel like a beloved daughter. I will always cherish my time in the Seattle temple with you.
