Roy Edmond Orahood, Jr
Roy Edmond Orahood, Jr. passed away at his home in Richland, Washington on April 3, 2014 surrounded by his loving wife, daughter, son-in-law, and his furry friend, Sassy. Roy was born to Roy E. and Estella Orahood in Burley, Idaho on December 17, 1934. When Roy was 18 years old, he decided to join the United States Air Force where he was stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nevada. His service included working as a mechanic for the Thunderbirds.
After serving his country, Roy became a Firefighter for the City of Las Vegas until an eye injury sidelined him. Roy moved to California and began a new career as an X-ray Technician. It was during this time that he met and married the love of his life, Carol DeBois. Upon his marriage to Carol, he also became a father for her three children. In 1978, Roy and Carol decided to move to Kennewick, Washington where he began the last chapter of his career as a Radiation Monitor at the Hanford nuclear reservation. Roy retired after 16 years of service and he and Carol decided to travel. They explored Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, and finally settling in Arizona before coming back to Washington a year ago to be closer to their daughter Kathy and her family.
Roy loved to fish, camp, explore new places and ride motorcycles. A lot of memories were made camping on dry lake beds in California, being at Big Bear Lake in California, and exploring old ghost towns along the way. This was the kind of life that Roy enjoyed the most and was the hardest for him to give up when his physical condition deteriorated.
Roy is preceded in death by both his parents, his brother Leo Orahood and his sisters, Verna Anderson, Doris Holden, June Funderberg, and Laura Bell Orahood. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carol Orahood; his sons Mark Gehrig Utah, David Gehrig Utah, Randy DeBois California, and Jim Wieser California; his daughters Vicki Carter Utah and Kathy and Brock Williams Washington; and his siblings Fred Orahood Washington and Lois Fredicks Utah. He also leaves behind 5 grandchildren and at least 3 great-grandchildren.
There will be a graveside service on Saturday, April 12, 2014 starting at 1:00 pm at Einan's Sunset Memorial Gardens in the Veteran's section at 915 ByPass Highway, Richland, Washington. A family prayer will be held at the graveside starting at 12:30 pm.
I am so sorry for your loss. I worked with Roy from the early80’s until his retirement. He was a great co-worker. When he retired he said he was going to travel. So I’m glad to read that you two did travel. My thoughts and prayers are with you and all of his family.
Meeting your Dad this last year was a blessing, thank you for sharing your parents with me, Kathy. My prayers are for you and your family to find healing from your loss and the remembrance of all those wonderful memories you made together.
To carol and family
Uncle Roy is a loss to the Orahood family and he will be always dear to our hearts and close in thoughts Love you Gary and Sheri Orahood
To Carol and Family,
Roy was a special friend. Although he sounded gruff sometimes, he was really a very caring and shy person with many talents. Our hearts and prayers are with you during this time. Remember that he is in a better place, because the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow is not here on earth, but rather it is when the Lord brings you home.
