Andrea S. Green, a freelance writer and prolific student with degrees in Japanese, biology, anthropology, and English, died Tuesday in Seattle following surgery for kidney cancer. She was 35.

Friends remember her as generous, hardworking, keenly intellectual, tenacious in her insistence on excellence, and deeply kind and caring to those in need. As a tutor at Washington State University Tri-Cities, she helped hundreds of students navigate the complexities of academic writing.

Andrea was born in Virginia, Minnesota to Bill and Sally Green. She and her family moved to Richland, Washington when she was eleven, but she never forgot her Minnesota childhood—figure skating, the snow and trees, the closeness of small-town life.

After graduating from Hanford High School in 1996, Andrea's diverse interests and love of learning took her to Evergreen State College in Olympia, Yamasa Language Institute in Okazaki, Japan, and Washington State University in Pullman and the Tri-Cities, where she founded the student newspaper and was a founding editor of the campus literary journal.

She worked at many different places over the years, from Wizards of the Coast to the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest Science Office. Wherever she went, colleagues treasured her wit and perseverance.

She was a movie reviewer for The Entertainer and loved cinema more than anything. Even in the last weeks of her life, she went to as many movies as she physically could, finding tremendous joy and comfort in the ritual of going to the theater and sharing that experience with her friends and loved ones.

Andrea is survived by her parents, Bill and Sally Green, and her cat, Snerk.

A celebration of Andrea's life will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 11th at the Events at Sunset Event Center, 915 Bypass Highway, Richland. In lieu of flowers, her family requests donations to the Benton-Franklin Humane Society bfhs.com.
