Catherine Elaine (Kay) Zweifel, beloved sister, mother, grandmother and friend died peacefully in Richland on November 29, 2014.

Kay was born November 20, 1919 in Joliet, Illinois, the second of five children of Leo James Deiss and Edna Pauline (Eich) Deiss.  After graduation from St. Francis Academy and Metropolitan Business College in Joliet, she began a short-lived career working for a family physician there.  She married Harry Zweifel in 1943 and in 1944 they moved from Joliet to Richland where Harry went to work on the Hanford Project. 

Kay was a full-time homemaker until after their children were raised and their oldest son left for college.  She worked for Dr. Ellner, a Richland physician, for two years before pursuing a strong interest in learning more about her Catholic faith.  At her church, Christ the King, she joined prayer groups and service groups, taught religious education, studied the Bible and attended spiritual retreats.  She was a long-time financial supporter of the Richland Food Bank and for several years served there as a volunteer.  Kay enjoyed being a part of the Kadlec Auxiliary for 20 years.

Kay was a nurturing wife, mother, grandmother and caregiver who learned from her mother how to cook and serve wonderful meals.  From her father, an avid reader, she learned the love of the written word and continued reading and learning until her death.  

In addition to her family, she faithfully supported friends, neighbors, fellow parishioners and strangers, both materially and in prayer.  Her checkbook was always open for individuals and organizations seeking her help---especially the poor and needy.

She was a loving, giving, wonderful person and will be missed by all who knew her. 

 Kay is survived by her four children, Gary Zweifel (Ramona) of Everett, WA,

 David Zweifel (Kristi) of Richland, WA, Cheryl Tofte of Portland, OR and Curtis Zweifel of Mt. Vernon, WA.  She also leaves five beloved Zweifel grandchildren: Darby, Zachary, Danny, Christopher and Kara; one sister, Donna (Milton) Wunderlich, one sister-in-law Joan Deiss and numerous nieces and nephews. 

 She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Zweifel; brothers, Paul Deiss and Robert Deiss and her sister, Audrey Abens. 

A Rosary will be held on Wednesday at 7:00pm at Einan’s at Sunset in Richland.  Mass of Christian burial will be on Thursday, December 11, at 11:00am at Christ the King Church in Richland.  We will be having a light reception following the Mass at the Church. Following the reception a graveside service will take place at Sunset Gardens, 915 ByPass Hwy, Richland.
