Lyell Ray Bingham, of Richland, WA passed away at age 89 on September 3rd, 2015 at Kadlec Regional Medical Center from causes incident to age.  He was preceded in death by wife Donna Heileson Bingham on September 10, 1998.  Lyell is survived by children Mark Bingham, Tucson, AZ, Sandra (spouse Randall Hanstead), Bellingham, WA, John Bingham (spouse John Perez), Seattle, WA and James Bingham (spouse Cindra) of Richland, WA.  He is survived by five grandchildren: Aaron Hanstad and Amber Hanstead, Bellingham, WA, Bradley Bingham, Tucson, AZ, Madeleine Bingham, Pullman, WA and Emma Bingham, Richland, WA.  Lyell is survived by one great-grandchild, Iris Matilda Hanstad, Bellingham,WA.

Lyell was born on October 26, 1925 to Mark Moroni and Johanne Loeffler Bingham, on the family farm in Maeser, Uintah County, UT.  Lyell had two brothers:  Herman and Earl, and three sisters:  Melba, Myrna and Marie.  

Lyell played football at Uintah High School and graduated in 1943.  He joined the United States Army Air Corps and was stationed in both Texas and New Mexico.  After World War II, Lyell enrolled in Utah State University in Logan where he received a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.

On a blind date in 1951, Lyell met his future wife Donna Bernice Heileson.  Donna and Lyell, whom Donna affectionately called "Bing", were married on December 15th, 1951.  Their marriage was solemnized in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Idaho Falls Temple on June 24, 1953.

Lyell and Donna moved in 1952 to Pine Bluff, AR, where Lyell worked on a construction job.  In June 1953, Dad accepted employment at the Hanford Site.  Their first child, Mark, was born in Kennewick General Hospital in 1953.  In 1955, Lyell changed jobs and the family moved to Ogden, UT where daughter Sandy was born in 1955.  In 1956, Lyell accepted employment with the Atomic Energy Commission and moved the family to Idaho Falls.  Their second son, John, was born in L.D.S. Hospital in Idaho Falls in 1958.

In April 1964, Lyell accepted a transfer with AEC and moved the family back to Richland.  Son James was born in Richland in 1967.  In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Lyell served as a High Councilor in the L.D.S. Richland Stake.  In later years, Lyell served as Executive Secretary and Assistant Ward Clerk.  For over thirty years, concurrent with his work at Hanford, Lyell was a contributing member of the National Society of Professional Engineers.

Lyell was an avid golfer his entire life, and in his early Richland years, bowled in leagues at Atomic Lanes on Thursday nights.  Lyell and Donna loved art and music and made sure the family home was filled with an abundance of books and records devoted to these topics.   Lyell was an adept fix-it man and did his own plumbing and electrical wiring.  

Dad continued to work for DOE (formerly the AEC) until January 1982 when he retired and began work at Morrison-Knudsen (MK) in Richland on the Basalt Waste Isolation Project (BWIP).  In February 1990 Lyell and Donna moved to St. Charles, MO for work on a new MK environmental cleanup project.  Later in 1990, Lyell and Donna relocated to Texas for Lyell's job on the Superconductor Collider.  In Texas, Dad and Mom lived in the Dallas suburb of Duncanville.  Upon Lyell's retirement in 1992, Lyell and Donna returned to Richland.   After a fall in 2010 requiring surgery, Dad moved to the Pioneer Adult Home in Richland.  As a family, we are ever grateful to the Pioneer Home for their loving care of Dad over these past few years.

The viewing will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, September 10th at Events at Sunset in Richland, WA.  Funeral services will be held for Lyell at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 11, 2015 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Jadwin Chapel in Richland.  Burial will take place at Sunset Gardens in Richland following the service.
