Philip Hutton

Philip Homer Hutton passed away Friday, January 1, 2016. What a way to start the New Year in peace and comfort.

Phil was born in Jeffers, Montana, July 7, 1926, to Earl H. and Myrtle F. Hutton. He was the youngest in the family by several years and was spoiled by his older sister and three brothers.

Grade school was a country schoolhouse that he rode to on a horse (bad weather) or a bicycle (good weather). He attended Ennis High School, where he boarded the school year, but went back to his parents’ ranch as often as he could. He graduated High School in 1944 and enrolled in Montana State College (now University) and graduated in 1950 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. While there, he served in the Army Air Force cadet program, enrolling at age 17.

On September 10, 1949, he married Eunice Hunt and they were together for the next 66 years. May of 1952 brought them to Richland, Washington, to work with General Electric. When GE left, Phil was one of the last to transfer to PNNL (Battelle). Phil was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and served on the Acoustic Emissions Working group. In February 1973, he was named Tri-City Engineer of the Year. During his working years, he and Eunice traveled around the world extensively, particularly enjoying trips to Japan and Australia. He retired in 1988 and enjoyed many rounds of golf with his close friends.

Phil was a member of Central United Protestant church for 63 years, serving in a number of roles and capacities.

He leaves behind his wife Eunice Hutton, daughter Laurie Hutton, granddaughters Ketra (Andrew) Isaacson and Whitney (Joel) Swensen, daughter-in-law Cathy Montgomery (Joe), great granddaughter Olive Isaacson and Genny (Ralph) Bunker and many great-nieces and nephews. Phil was preceded in death by his parents, brothers (Victor Wilbur and Lowell), his sister Genevieve, son Mark and granddaughter Victoria.

A Memorial Service will be held at C.U.P. Church on Sunday, January 10, at 2 p.m. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in memory of Philip Hutton to Montana State University Alumni Foundation, Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, P.O. 172750, Bozeman, MT 59717-2750.

  • How I will miss my dear Uncle Phil! He was part of my life since the beginning. I remember seeing him often at the ranch, and in Billings, and visiting in Richland. Such a warm and witty and smart guy. I will especially remember him though for all the help he was to me when I was dealing with my own parents decline, with a ready ear, helpful advice, and always on call. He was so kind to his brother Lowell. Another link with the past gone–but always in my heart.

  • Our thoughts and prayers for Eunice and Family in your loss of Phil. You Huttons have been so good for the Meyers as family friends, and supporters of Dan & Patti. Its been nice sharing visits and Eunice’s helping Dan and other young golfers over their early years. Phil’s good work on Hanford projects has been special too. You guys must take much of credit for the success of Meyers kids we have, and now grandkids are showing those quality lifestyles too!

  • As former neighbors of Phil and Eunice we were deeply saddened to receive the call from Eunice about Phil’s passing. We had many wonderful “cocktail hours” on their deck and a number of Christmas get togethers. Phil was a true gentleman with a quiet demeanor . Sharon and I are so very glad that we can call Phil and Eunice our friends. Our hearts and prayers are with the family.

  • Eunice & Laurie; please know that my thoughts and prayers are with both of you. I’ve always considered Phil a life-long friend, having worked with him at Battelle for many years. He had a personality that couldn’t be beat. Eunice, I know your feelings since I lost Gene this past April. The only thing that can replace all those memories, is to keep thinking of them and putting a smile on your face because they were such great happenings.
    God bless you both.

  • Phil was the kindest boss I ever had and he will be missed very much. It meant so much to me when my grandparents (Cecil and Geneva Bell) and father (Bill Norton) died and Phil and Eunice came to the funerals. My heartfelt prayers go out to you, Eunice, and the rest of your family.
