Carl, 85, was a good husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.  Carl passed away February 25, due to complications of Alzheimer’s and PLS.  He was born in Bland, Missouri on May 18, 1930, to William J. Bryan Winsel and Ora (Hollandsworth) Winsel.  He was their only child.  The family moved to Independence Missouri in 1944 where Carl attended High school.  On July 17, 1951 he joined the Air Force.  He trained to be a Tail Gunner on a B-29.  He was stationed in Guam; Alaska; and Travis AFB in Northern CA where he met his wife, Sue.  They were married on January 10, 1954.  He was then stationed at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho until his term of service ended on July 16, 1955.

Sue and Carl returned to Independence, Mo and lived there until Carl began his college education at Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He graduated in 1958 earning an Electronic Engineering Degree.  Sue worked for the U.S. Rubber Company in Fort Wayne. Upon graduation, Carl accepted a job from Convair in San Diego, CA.  At that time Sue was pregnant with their oldest son, Mike, and they pulled their 33 ft. house trailer to San Diego, CA with their 1954 Plymouth.  After a long journey and some mechanical difficulties they arrived in one piece and lived in a trailer park for a few months.  A month before Mike was born, they found a lovely apartment to welcome their first born son into their lives.

In 1960 they bought a home in Escondido, just north of San Diego in time to welcome, Steve, their youngest son into the family.  Carl worked for Convair until 1964 then accepted a job offer from Aerojet in Sacramento, CA.  They rented a home in Fair Oaks for a year until they bought their own home.  They lived in Fair Oaks until 1969.

Carl accepted a job offer from EG&G at the INEL, a DOE Site near Idaho Falls, ID.  They lived in Idaho Falls until 1988 when Carl took his first retirement.

The family enjoyed hiking, canoeing, skiing and camping with their friends from St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Idaho Falls.  In 1985 EG&G sent Carl to Japan for 18 months to work with the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute on the LOFT program (Loss of Fluid Technology).  Sue was working for Westinghouse at the time and was able to get an 18 month furlough from her job to go to Japan with him.  It was a wonderful experience.

Carl retired in 1988 and they moved to Vacaville, CA to be near family.  Carl accepted a job at McCllean Air Force Base in Sacramento, CA and worked there until EG&G hired him back to help with an Environmental Clean Up Project at March AFB in Riverside, CA.  After it was completed, Carl took his final retirement in 1992.

Carl and Sue enjoyed traveling to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, The Netherlands, China and Hawaii and a cruise to Alaska.  They also traveled to every state in the U.S. except Iowa, New Jersey, and Michigan.    Carl and Sue proceeded to follow their grandchildren to Bremerton, WA and then to the Tri-Cities.

Carl’s passion was photography and their home displays many of his photo prints that he matted and framed himself.

Carl maintained his sense of humor even as his memory and body declined.  His favorite response was “stupid is as stupid does”, and “write if you get work”.  His favorite plaque remained in sight in his room at Guardian Angeles: “Old Age Is Not For Sissies”.  The family appreciates all the great Care Givers at Guardian Angeles, especially those that could talk him into taking a shower!

He also enjoyed going to CBRC to watch Sue play tennis and talk to her tennis friends.  The CBRC staff (especially Dan) were very kind to him and Sue appreciated their keeping him safe while she was on the court. 

      The family appreciates her tennis friends and other friends and neighbors who often visited Carl at home and at Guardian Angeles.

      Carl is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sue, sons; Mike (Susan), Steve, (Molly), grandchildren; Mandy and Joshua, and great-grandchildren; Yvanna and Olivia

The family suggests donations to Alzheimer’s Research.

There will be a memorial service at Einan’s Event Center on March 19, 2016 at 3:00 p.m.
