Dorothy M. Killand

Dorothy (“Dottie”) Killand, 88, was joyfully welcomed into Heaven on Jan. 31, 2017 by her beloved son, Kim, and husband, “Woody”, as well as her parents and five of her brothers and sisters.

A longtime Richland resident, Dottie died peacefully – just as she lived – in the loving care of friends and the angels who staff The Hospice House in Kennewick.

She was born on May 14, 1928 to John J. and Helen Blindauer in Mitchell, SD, the middle of fourteen children.

Always an elegant lady, one might never guess that Dottie grew up on a large farm with cattle, pigs, chickens, wheat, corn and other crops, all of which she helped tend.

After graduating from Notre Dame High School in Mitchell in 1946, she headed west to attend Eastern Washington University where she met and married Elwood Killand in 1951.  Together, they moved to Richland where Woody served the Richland School District for over 31 years. 

While he taught many Richland students over the years, Dottie worked for the Atomic Energy Commission for 17 years and later for Energy Northwest in both administration and security.

She loved sporting events of all types, but especially Mariners baseball.  And, she loved traveling (Hawaii was a favorite) and attending Elderhostel programs.  She also found much joy in gardening, flowers and gift giving to family and friends.

Always considerate of others, Dottie kept informed by listening to the late night radio!

In addition to Kim and Woody and her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Bernadine and Mary, and three brothers, Coleman, twin brothers Jim, and John.

Dottie is survived by brothers, Claire, Ed, Don, and sisters, Joan, Janice, Anita, Janet, and Bonnie as well as a large extended family of brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

 Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be Monday, Feb. 6, at 6 p.m. in the chapel at Christ the King Catholic Church.   A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7, also at Christ the King.  A catered gathering will follow at noon in the Event Center at Sunset Gardens.
