Marge was born in Lind, Washington on December 1, 1932, the daughter to German immigrants John and Hilda Scheeler. She grew up on a wheat farm and was the 9th out of 10 children. Marge lived in Lind until age 18, when she moved to Pullman to attend Washington State University. In 1952, she met John Hughes, whom she married and had six children. Marge lived in Moses Lake, Bellevue, and then moved to Richland in 1966 where she made this her beloved home for the rest of her life.
Marge completed her degree from Central Washington University, Phi Kappa Phi, with a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy. She had a passion for learning and was a prolific reader. She read over 20 history books in the last couple years. In addition, she took great joy in playing the piano. The family will always remember her playing everything from jazz to Christmas carols. It was her gift, a passion that she shared with anyone who would listen. It was an experience to see her play. The family will always remember her “dancing in her seat to the music” with a big smile on her face.
Marge had a passion for gardening and an eye for interior decorating, having designed and decorated six (6) custom built homes. She loved the challenges associated with the construction process and designing what she called very livable spaces in her homes. In her spare time Marge loved to travel and was extremely active. She was an active member of Meadow Springs Country Club and was a member since the opening of the Columbia Basin Racquet Club where she enjoyed swimming. In her travels, she enjoyed trips to Europe and visiting tropical locations in both Hawaii and the Caribbean. Marge played golf all over the United States during her travels.
Family was the most important part of Marge’s life. She was the loving mother to her children: Douglas (deceased), Debra, Pamela, Lisa Kaiser (Gary), Marc (Tricia) and Julie. Her beloved grandchildren include: Jack Kaiser, Michael Hughes, Paige Hughes, Madison Hughes, Matthew Hughes, and Ally Hughes. Marge was a member of St. Louise Parish in Bellevue, WA, then Christ the King Parish in Richland.
Mom, you were such a great mom and you’ll always be. Can’t thank you enough. Let’s do it again in our next lifetime.
I never got to meet you but you gave me a wonderful friend in your daughter Lisa. May God take you in his arms and lead you to a place with music and flowers where you can be filled with peace and joy!
Bob and I are deeply saddened to learn of Marge’s passing. She was a great friend and neighbor for many years! Our last memory of her was at the home reception for John after his passing. She remembered us and even got up and played a tune for Bob on the piano! She was a wonderful pianist.
Our sympathy to all of you. You had wonderful parents who loved you all and were very proud of you and your accomplishments.
