Richard Barker

Following a brief illness, Richard “Dick” Wayne Barker passed away in a home care facility on September 29, 2021. He was 90 years old.

Dad was born in Butte, Montana to Carroll and Jennie (Bull) Barker, the third of five children. The family moved around when he was a child and settled in Spokane, which he called home and where he graduated from North Central High School.

Dad joined the U.S. Navy out of high school and received an honorable discharge in 1953. He continued to serve in the Naval Reserves for six years. After leaving the Navy he returned to Spokane where he worked at White’s Boots for 5 years.  After White’s, he worked at Kaiser Research where he met mom.  They married in 1956.  Together, they moved south to Richland to work at the Hanford Site where he worked for various contractors in several positions during his career. They built their first home in Richland in 1963 where they lived in the same house for 58 years. He retired from Hanford in December 1994.

He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and spent several years involved with the Boy Scouts of America, including serving as a scoutmaster. Dad enjoyed fly fishing, backpacking and camping, things his sons would also enjoy as kids and adults. He was also an avid golfer until the last few years.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joann Barker, their two sons, Ward (Margit) and Wayne (LeeAnn), 8 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his four siblings David, Barbara, Marjorie and Grace.

Cremation has taken place and he will be interred at Fairmount Memorial Park in Spokane. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
