November 7, 1929 – January 8, 2022

Richland, Washington – Leo Mattson was born in Butte Mt on Nov 7,1929 to Lillian (Hautala) and Jalmer Mattson. He died peacefully on Jan 8, 2022 at the age of 92.

Leo spent his early childhood in Butte, as a teenager he drove to Alaska via the Alcan Highway with this stepfather. While in Anchorage he rode out the Alaska earthquake of 1946 on the scaffolding of a hotel he was working on. After serving in the Korean War he returned to Butte where he married his life long love, Katie Mattson, on August 22, 1954.

They moved to California where Leo had a long career as a carpenter and was valued for his skills as a finish carpenter. Leo and Katie raised 3 children and had many wonderful adventures. They enjoyed camping, motorcycle riding, RVing, the Ramblin Rovers, and cruising. After retirement they returned to Montana then relocated to Washington to be closer to their children. They often said they had a wonderful life.

Leo is survived by his wife of 67yrs, Katie, daughters Lisa Jackson and Debra (John Phillips), and grandsons Jack and Mason Phillips. He was predeceased by his son Mark.

Leo was a kind and decent man with a wonderful sense of humor who never met a stranger. He will be missed very much.
